R Bike

Imagine leaving the house with your Motorcycle in “Standard” mode. As you leave the side streets and enter the open highway, you shape-shift into a Cruiser and take the highway out of town. The ride gets long and so for comfort you switch to Touring mode. After many miles, you take an exit onto rural two-lane twisty roads and see a dirt and gravel road on your left, so you shape-shift into an Enduro and take the turn ….

Anna Nicole Smith dead at 39

Posted in Celebrity, Florida, Media, National, News, Newspaper on February 8th, 2007

Anna Nicole Smith — Playboy model, multimillionaire widow, tabloid favorite, new mom — died today after she collapsed at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.

Her sudden death at the age of 39 ended a meteoric, scandalous path through the celebrity stratosphere.

An hour after Smith’s collapse, she was pronounced dead at Memorial Regional Hospital, Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger said at a press conference.

Smith was in two-bedroom suite with her private nurse at the time she collapsed, Tiger said. The nurse called the hotel operator for help at 1:38 p.m.; seven minutes later, Smith was given CPR by her bodyguard at the Hard Rock before she was taken to the hospital. Smith was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 2:49 p.m.

Super Bowl Facts

Posted in Editorial, Entertainment, Food, Media, National, News, Shopping, Sports, Super Bowl, Television, Upcoming events on February 1st, 2007

With the approach of Super Bowl this weekend, I thought I would post some interesting game stats. These stats are not for the football game, rather they are statistics surrounding the super bowl and how it effects the media.

  • Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts sports merchandise have seen a dramatic rise in retail sales this year.
  • More women are drawn to the Indianapolis Colts
than the Chicago Bears. Data show that 59% of Indianapolis women are Colts fans,
vs. 46% of Chicago women who are Bears fans.
  • The 2006 Super Bowl was the highest rated TV show
of the year, attracting more than 90 million U.S. viewers.
  • The cost for a 30-second TV advertisement reached
an all-time high in 2006, while traditional advertiser categories continued to
    dominate the broadcast.
  • Super Bowl advertisers in 2006 saw a sharp
increase in visits to their web sites following the big game.
  • Album sales of the Super Bowl halftime performers
soared in the week following their appearance in the halftime show.
  • Box office figures continue to plunge on Super
    Bowl Sunday.
  • Sales of soft drinks, beer and chips rise
    significantly before the Super Bowl.

Comparing last year’s Super Bowl food preferences in the two markets that are
home to this year’s teams – Chicago and Indianapolis – there are some noteworthy
similarities and difference between the two cities. Looking at the largest
overall percentage of sales increases, both markets showed strong sales growth
in cocktail franks and processed cheese loaves. However, Chicago area
supermarkets showed strong growth in sales of frozen unbreaded crab,
refrigerated fruit, dip mixes, and dairy dips; while Indianapolis area
supermarkets experienced bumps in the sales of ‘Miracle Whip’ type salad
dressing, frozen hors d’ oeuvres & snacks, brownie mixes, and bratwurst
& knockwurst.

A consumer segmentation analysis from the marketing company Spectra revealed
some of the unique characteristics of Super Bowl viewers from Miami,
Indianapolis, and Chicago compared with national professional football fans.
Utilizing Spectra’s BehaviorScape framework, viewer characteristics can be
determined based upon BehaviorStages (which bring to life key household factors
that impact consumer purchasing behavior), and LifeStyles, (which further
differentiate consumers by highlighting affluence and the neighborhood type in
which they live).
For instance, most viewers of professional football across the U.S. typically
watch on the weekend one or more times per month, and tend to come from affluent
neighborhoods from a variety of household types. They span across all
neighborhood types and tend to skew toward couples 35+ without children in the
household as well as singles under 35 with no children. Popular Super Bowl
snacks that skew highly across the average US viewer are bags of nuts, brats,
popcorn, and frozen poultry.
Super Bowl viewers in the host city of Miami watch the game on TV live in
both urban and affluent suburban households across household types.
Indianapolis residents who watched the Super Bowl last year generally come
from rural and downscale suburban neighborhoods. Additionally:
– Indianapolis viewers purchase above average amounts of sausage, buns,
and brats than the average viewer.– Indianapolis viewers are likely to do their grocery shopping (possibly
for Super Bowl snacks) at Wal-Mart, Aldi, or Kroger.

– There is also a very high concentration of Super Bowl viewers who are
likely to shop in smaller accounts such as IGA and Buehler’s Buy Low.

Chicago residents who watched the Super Bowl last year likely live in urban
and affluent suburban households across household types. Additionally:

– Viewers in Chicago tend to purchase more bagged nuts, beer, frozen
poultry and meat than the average viewer.

– Chicago viewers are likely to do their grocery shopping (possibly for
Super Bowl snacks) in Dominick’s, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods.

There is also a very high concentration of Super Bowl viewers who are likely
to shop in smaller accounts such as Wild Oats and Sunset Food Marts.

So by the numbers, it looks like on Super Bowl Sunday Americans prefer to eat tortilla chips, drink light beer but regular soda throw some frozen steaks and chicken on the grill while munching on cocktail franks. It appears that there is a toss up in dipping your tortilla chips on eating prepared nachos. Either way we seemed to have consumed over 10 million dollars in tortilla chips and drink over 17 million dollars worth of beer washing them down.

These facts and statistics were compiled by and found at Nielsen Media Research, please visit their site for complete details.

Hollister Is Back!!!!!!

Posted in Announcements, Hollister, Motorcycle Events, Motorcycles, National, News, Press Release on January 31st, 2007

After a one-year absence, Hollister is back with Horse Power. The 60 year Hollister Motorcycle Rally continues its tradition in 2007. For the first time, the city of Hollister has enlisted the help of a promotions company to create a motorcyclist’s entertainment Mecca in its historic downtown area. Veteran event company Horse Power Promotions enlists its 26-year expertise in public relations and production to work around the clock on one of the biggest makeovers in rally history.
In years past Hollister has been known for the type of rally that attracted a crowd who would simply ride downtown for one day around the 4th of July, opting for a t-shirt and a cold one, take a look and ride off. But Horse Power Promotions is working to change that. By stepping up the non-stop entertainment, organizing on-going demonstrations for bikers such as creating a builders square full of the bike building craftsmen of today), Hollister’s 2007 Rally will be one its most memorable and actionpacked.
Hollister Motorcycle Rally is the largest of its kind in California and one of the top ten in the United States, always offering a great line up of vendors. Horse Power Promotions and the new Hollister Motorcycle Rally Committee plan on luring more vendors than ever before and the new easy-to-maneuver layout of the downtown motorcycle marketplace will insure all vendors a premium space in the heart of Hollister, while also creating a great shopping experience with the downtown merchants.
The excitement is mounting: Custom Bike Show, two stages with live music, Corbin open house, great riding are just a taste of what’s on tap. New for 2007 is VIP bike parking with helmet and leather checks. Go to www.horsepowerpromotions.com for info on the value packed Rally packages and the latest news.

Harley-Davidson XL 1200N Nightster Rocks on the Road

Posted in Announcements, Florida, Media, Motorcycles, National, News, Orlando, Press Release on January 29th, 2007

New Sportster Model Fuses Fiendish Formula of Performance and Style

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Harley-Davidson Sportster motorcycles get a burst of adrenalin with the launch of the new XL 1200N Nightster. With a wicked combination of exceptional performance, unique design and a low seat height, the Nightster has a gritty, urban feel offering a sharp ride for the street.

The new Sportster model was announced today at the Harley-Davidson Winter Dealer Meeting in Orlando, Fla. Blending a low seat height and mid-mount controls with the powerful torque of the rubber-mounted Evolution V-Twin engine, the XL 1200N Nightster adds another exciting option to the Sportster family.

“The XL 1200N Nightster is a blacked-out street bike that continues a half century of Sportster tradition of innovative, fun and versatile motorcycles,” said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Director of Motorcycle Product Development. “With loads of truly select features and components, the Nightster takes all the enhancements made to the Sportster family in recent years to an entirely different level.”

The distinctive look and feel of the XL 1200N Nightster centers on a low seat height of 25.3 inches that makes it comparable to the XL Sportster 883 Low, an inch lower than the XL Sportster 1200 Low and among the lowest riding of all Harley-Davidson models. Besides enjoying the lower seat height, the Nightster rider goes solo with a one-piece, Sportster classic seat.

The mood gets drastically darker on this new Sportster, as the Nightster features a host of black components. Black wheel rims and hubs contrast with chrome spokes, while the front forks and clamp, headlight cover, handlebar, levers, turn signals and air cleaner insert are all finished in black.

The rear belt guard and front fender clamps are also black, but are opened up with a bullet hole pattern. The rear fender is cut back to show more of the rear tire. The back of the Nightster rides without a separate tail light, as that feature is integrated with the rear turn signals.

Taking the latest Sportster design for a ride into the past, the Nightster features a side-mounted license plate holder and front fork gaiters. While the side-mount license plate is a street design cue, the fork gaiters are a retro component that can help protect the fork seals from dirt and debris.

The Nightster rides smoothly with a 1200cc Evolution engine, which features a new Medium Gray finish with polished and black treatments. The transmission and airbox cover also sport the new finish. The Evolution engine provides a responsive throttle and high performance, while the integrated transmission has quietly meshing helical cut gears and lightweight dog rings that reduce shift effort.

Like all 2007 Sportsters, the Nightster has Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), reduced clutch lever effort, redesigned gauges, high performance carbon fiber belts and improved front brake lever effort.

As part of the original Harley-Davidson hot rod motorcycle family, the Nightster has a design refined from the racetrack to the street that is primed for customized creativity.

The Nightster is available in Vivid Black, as well as four two-tone paint schemes with a unique Harley-Davidson fuel tank graphic. The fuel cap, headlamp trim ring and oil dipstick cover are coated in a new Silver Satin finish. The Nightster is offered only in North American markets.

The XL 1200N Nightster features:
Rubber-mounted 1200cc XL Evolution engine
Medium Gray powder-coated engine with polished and black treatments
Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI)
High-compression, high-flow cylinder heads
High-performance cams

New York City Motorcycle Show

Posted in Announcements, Bike Shows, Entertainment, Motorcycle Pictures, Motorcycles, National, News on January 26th, 2007

I finally found a decent article, with pictures, of the NYC Bike Show that was held in New York this past weekend. This is one show that I plan to make it to, one day. The place looks packed in the pictures and it was estimated that around 80,000 visitors toured the show at the Javitz Center. Matt Hotch, Dave Perowitz, Billy Lane and my friend The Ice Cream Man From Hell were just a few of the notable people of the industry that made appearance during the weekend.

Head on over to BikerPics.Org to view the pictures and read more about the New York Motorcycle Show.

Choppers Inc. announces limited retail location store hours in 2007

Posted in Announcements, Brevard County, Celebrity, Chopper Builders, Editorial, Florida, Local, Melbourne, Motorcycles, National, News, Parts and Accessories, Shopping, State on January 9th, 2007

sign on door at choppers inc

There was no big press release in the news papers or on the Internet to tell visitors traveling to the Melbourne, Florida based Choppers Inc of the store closing. On the front door hangs a small printout from the company web site made into a sign. The sign says that Billy Lane’s store, Choppers Inc. will only be open during major motorcycle event and race days and those hours will be announced 30 days prior.

Billy Lane working at Choppers Inc in Melbourne, Florida

While it was announced that Billy Lane was planning to work hard at his Choppers Inc. location preparing motorcycles for the up coming 2007 bike shows, it seems this announcement was low profile. The only way visitors would know the store was not open for business was to visit the news section of the Choppers Inc web site or, as many, visit the retail store location only to find it closed to the public.

Hubless Wheel design created by Billy Lane of Choppers Inc

Billy Lane, is probably most famous in the motorcycle industry for his creation of the hubless wheel design and known to the general public as 3 time biker build-off winner, Monster Garage and owner of Choppers Inc. located in Melbourne, Florida. Billy Lane also holds many patents on custom motorcycle parts that he designed.

Sopping for choppers inc shirts and stuff

While Billy Lane and Choppers Inc motorcycles were well known, it was the Choppers Inc. shirts, hats and posters that people would visit the Melbourne retail location to shop for. Those purchases must now be made online only until the store opens during the next motorcycle event.

The number 1 cop killer

Posted in Announcements, Law, Media, National, News, Press Release on December 27th, 2006

We all know that being a Police Officer is a dangerous job. But, I am betting that most would guess that the way most cops die is by shooting or violent crime, right?

Wrong. According to a recent press release, the average law enforcement officer has a better chance of being killed in the line of duty by traffic accident, than by violent crime. Read the complete report below.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — More than 150 law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty nationwide during 2006, with traffic-related deaths jumping dramatically over the prior year and shooting fatalities dropping.
According to preliminary figures released today, there were 151 federal, state and local law enforcement officers killed while performing their duties during 2006. California had the most fatalities with 17, followed by Virginia with 10, New York and Texas which both lost nine, and Florida and Illinois with eight each. These figures were part of a report issued annually and jointly by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), two nonprofit organizations that track officer fatalities.
For the ninth straight year, traffic-related incidents claimed the lives of more officers (73) than shootings (54) or any other cause of death. Of the 73 officers who died in traffic-related incidents, 47 were killed in automobile crashes, 15 were struck by vehicles, nine died in motorcycle crashes, and two died in bicycle crashes. This represented nearly a 16 percent increase over the 63 officers who were killed in traffic-related incidents in 2005. The number of officers killed in shootings declined by nearly nine percent from the 59 who were shot to death in 2005. These numbers are consistent with a historical trend that shows the number of officers killed in automobile crashes has jumped by 40 percent over the last three decades, while the number of officers who were shot to death during that period has declined by roughly the same amount.
Other causes of deaths included job-related illnesses (18), aircraft crashes (3), beating (1), stabbing (1) and terrorist attack (1). Five of the officers killed during 2006 were women.
“With the war on terror and recent reports of a surge in violent crime, we depend on our law enforcement professionals more than ever,” declared NLEOMF Chairman Craig W. Floyd. “These fatality figures are a shocking reminder of the sacrifices being demanded of our law officers. We owe all of them, and their families, a huge debt of gratitude.”
“When law enforcement officers die in the line of duty, their families need strong support,” said Jean Hill, National President of COPS. “Concerns of Police Survivors will be there for the families who lost an officer in 2006, encouraging them to find that support through the other law enforcement survivors and COPS programs. COPS saved my life by reaching out to me and my family in 2001. COPS is ready to do the same for the survivors of 2006.”

Just got back from Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Posted in Announcements, Entertainment, Internet Video, Media, Motorcycle Events, Motorcycles, Movies, National, News, Sturgis, Upcoming events on December 26th, 2006

dream_catcher_tank.jpg

Well, not really the event, but the Screaming Eagle Films Sturgis video”Stories from the road” is almost like being at the South Dakota motorcycle event. Unlike most videos that strictly show the uncensored or hot party of a motorcycle event, this video is about the ride. We have not yet made the trip to the otherwise sleepy little town of Sturgis, South Dakota to document the Sturgis motorcycle rally, but plans are being made for very near future visit.

Sturgis Bike Week is held the first full week in August of every year with the upcoming date for the 67th annual Sturgis rally to be held on August 6th through the 12th of 2007. Sometimes referred to as the Black Hills Rally, Sturgis Bike Week is held in the area of the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. The Mayor’s ride is now in the 5th season and is a beautiful motorcycle ride through the Black Hills to Mount Rushmore state park.

Watching the official Sturgis Video will get you revved up and ready for the 2007 motorcycle event season, and it is not far away. I will be posting updates and motorcycle rally information throughout the upcoming year, so keep an eye on my blog.

Thinking of getting a tattoo

Posted in Announcements, Health, Medical Research, National, News, Press Release on December 26th, 2006

Tattoo picture courtesy of Bike Week by MNO Photography

If you are thinking of getting a tattoo, but wonder if it may be one of those things you wish you had of never done. There is good news that was recently released in the medical field about a new tattoo ink.

Freedom-2, LLC, a pioneer in the development of safe, quality inks for the purpose of permanent but removable tattoos today announces their plan to deliver the first inks to the market in early 2007.

The Freedom-2 (F2) ink technology is the first and only patented ink designed specifically for safe and easy, future removal.  The technology is the result of combined seminal discoveries by R. Rox Anderson, M.D., Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital; Craig A. Drill; Susanna Mlynarczyk-Evans, Ph.D., and Bruce Klitzman, Ph.D. and Kim Edward Koger, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Duke University.

The F2 ink uses biodegradable and bioabsorbable dyes such as cosmetic-grade iron oxide that are encapsulated in a biocompatible polymer bead known as ploymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).  These microscopic PMMA beads make up the F2 ink.  Tattoo artists use traditional delivery methods to provide an F2 tattoo – the only difference is the ink.

An F2 tattoo is easily removed by a single, standard laser treatment that breaks the PMMA beads allowing the body to naturally expel the dye trapped inside.  In contrast, the removal of traditional tattoo inks can create significant side effects including the development of carcinogenic properties, scarring and incomplete removal.  Additionally, removing a traditional tattoo typically requires multiple laser treatments that can cost several thousand dollars.

Today approximately 24 percent of Americans have at least one tattoo and as many as 17% of them seek to have their artwork removed1.  However, according to prominent physicians and researchers whose practices center around tattoos and tattoo removal, that number may be as high as 50%.  Until today, the removal of tattoos delivered with traditional ink, was a painful, incomplete process.  With the F2 ink technology, the picture changes.

“The F2 technology was discovered by practicing physicians with experience in the current tattoo removal technology.  These doctors, concerned for their patients and future patients, have developed a safe, less expensive, non-invasive system of tattoo removal,” said Martin Schmieg, President and CEO of Freedom-2 LLC.  “We are looking forward to presenting this technology to the public and believe it will allow more people to express themselves through body art without future regret.”

The F2 technology is being advanced by a team of researchers led by prominent polymer chemist and drug control delivery systems expert, Edith Mathiowitz, Ph.D at Brown University.  Mathiowitz leads the development team and works with research and development partner, MediUm-Tech, GmbH, Berlin, Germany on the encapsulation and formulation of the F2 ink.

Currently, F2 is continuing its human proof of concept studies with testing locations in both the US and Europe.  Following a successful suite of product tests, F2 will make the world’s first-ever permanent but removable tattoo ink available for retail sale in early 2007.
