Google goes black and turns out the lights at earthhour.org

Posted in Blogs, Computers, Editorial, Internet, Links, News, Search Engines on March 29th, 2008

Google goes black for Earth Hour

The main page of Google went black today in an effort to raise awareness for Earth Hour. However, the power of the big G seems to have knocked out the lights on the movement’s web site by sending record breaking traffic to their server.

www.earthhour.org down by Google traffic

Millions of visitors to the Earth Hour web site shut down their main server, but it appears they were somewhat prepared for this by adding new addresses and more than likely more servers.

Google knocks out the lights at earthhour.org

Internet traffic was rapidly being redirected to any available source that could handle it. Sub domains up to www9 at eatrhhourus.org were seen as an attempt to balance the load of Google traffic.

Saddam Hussein Execution drops Britney and Paris

Posted in Announcements, Celebrity, Editorial, Entertainment, Internet, Internet Video, Media, News, Politics, Rants and Raves, Search Engines on January 2nd, 2007

As a web designer, like most do, I watch keywords and rankings for all of my sites. Today the latest key word top list was posted at Word Tracker and most of the normal search terms were knocked out by the Saddam execution video.

In fact, the Saddam hanging video replaced keywords and search terms that normally hold the top 10 position. The execution of Saddam Hussein video holds 8 of 10 in results giving way to only sex at number 1 and porn listed at number 3. Sexy celebrity gossip and paparazzi hits Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are usually steady in the top 10, but slid down to take the 11th and 12th position in the key word report.

Along with Paris and Britney in the top, Google is normally listed as well. While many search engines visit this site, the pages have yet to receive any type of page rank….. hint, hint

Saddam Hussein in white body bag after execution by hanging

The world’s reaction to the death by execution of Saddam Hussein

While President Bush called it a milestone in the rebuilding of Iraq, he cautioned that the death of Saddam Hussein would not end the violence. It was reported that as Hussein was being readied for the execution, President Bush had to be rushed to a armored vehicle at his Texas ranch used for a tornado shelter. After the threat of tornado had been relieved, the tornado passed within 10 miles of the President’s Texas Ranch, President Bush retired for the night and was not awaken with the news of the execution.

“France, which advocates like all its European partners the universal abolition of the death penalty, takes note of Saddam Hussein’s execution. That decision belongs to the Iraqi people and to the Iraqi sovereign authorities. France calls on to all Iraqis to look forward and to work for reconciliation and national unity. More than ever the aim must be a return to the full sovereignty and stability of Iraq.” French foreign ministry

“(Brazil) does not believe carrying out this sentence will contribute to bringing peace to Iraq.” Brazil foreign ministry

“The rushed execution of Saddam Hussein is simply wrong. It signifies justice denied for countless victims who endured unspeakable suffering during his regime, and now have been denied their right to see justice served. ” Larry Cox, executive director, Amnesty International USA

“The president, the leader Saddam Hussein is a martyr and God will put him along with other martyrs. Do not be sad nor complain because he has died the death of a holy warrior,” said Sheik Yahya al-Attawi, a cleric at the Saddam Big Mosque.

U.S. troops cheered as news of Saddam’s execution appeared on television at the mess hall at Forward Operating Base Loyalty in eastern Baghdad. But some soldiers expressed doubt that Saddam’s death would be a significant turning point for Iraq.

“First it was weapons of mass destruction. Then when there were none, it was that we had to find Saddam. We did that, but then it was that we had to put him on trial,” said Spc. Thomas Sheck, 25, who is on his second tour in Iraq. “So now, what will be the next story they tell us to keep us over here?”

Google Alerts

Posted in Computers, Editorial, Internet, Search Engines on September 26th, 2006

What are Google Alerts?
Google Alerts are emails automatically sent to you when there are new Google results for your search terms. Google currently offer four types of alerts: ‘News,’ ‘Web,’ ‘News & Web,’ and ‘Groups.’

These are a great tool for a journalist! They are also very resourceful for people that want to keep up on news and events. They are much more simplified and easier to use than a news feeder.

You will need a free Google account, but once you set these nifty alerts up you will learn to enjoy them. You control the actions of your Google alerts and set your own keyword search. You can choose to have the alerts sent to you when it happens, once a day or once a week. The alerts come to you in your email and show a brief story line to see if it is something you may want to read. If the story looks interesting to you, click the link and boom you are there. You also have the choice of setting up your Google Alerts to search the web or news.
