The Whizzer Motor Bike

Whizzer motor bike gas tank

As I was cruising around today, I passed this motor bike by, it caught my eye. I immediately turned around to see what it was, in quick passing it appeared to be a replica type of a motor bike.

 back to basics Whizzer

What I found was that it was not a replica motor bike, it was a production motor bike that can be purchased these days called a Whizzer. With all the new styled motor scooters, mopeds and motorbikes that have hit the market lately coupled with all of the pocket bikes and mini choppers, this motor bike is a back to basics concept that can be appreciated. Back in 1901 the concept of the original Harley Davidson motorcycle was put on blueprint with the drawing of a engine to fit a bicycle by William S. Harley. The Whizzer on the other hand was not created until 1939 and was sold as a bicycle motor kit.

138 cc Whizzer motorbike engine

While most of today’s scooters and mopeds are sold with a 49 cc engine, the Whizzer has a 138cc or 1.95 h.p. engine that still can be purchased as a kit to build your own or a full production model as seen here.

Whizzer motor bike belt drive assembly

A belt drive and centrifugal clutch from the motor bike leave the pedals and chain in tact for those times you feel like getting a little exercise. I think that if I was in the market for a motorbike, the Whizzer would be in the running.

I have heard my Grandmother, who still calls motorcycles a motorbike, speak of Whizzers in my youth. My pop has mentioned them as well from his youthful days of long ago. He would never admit it when we were kids but later on told of enjoying riding a small motorcycle when stationed in Japan. He never did get one. My uncle on the otherhand, Pops brother, enjoyed many miles during the sixties until the eighties riding motorcycles all over the states. And to think-it all started with seeing a whizzer.

Do these things require a registration and tag??? If not they will be good for somebody who does not have drivers license to get around. Not my style. I think I will pass and make sure Santa knows it’s not on my wish list.

I have a couple of Whizzers. A brand new one and a vintage 1952 motorbike. I love them both. I can only drive the vintage bike to and from shows as it has no lights or flashers.
The new one does. I do not know what the laws are in other states but in Illinois you need to get it licenced but you do not need a motorcycle licence to operate them. I get 250 (approx) MPG and I get respectful glances from hard core Harley riders and pitiful grins from rice rocketeers. I am proud to ride my Whizzers. You can get all kinds of custom parts for them and dress them up nicely. Unfortunately they are no longer American made and are now made in Taiwan. But they are surprisingly well made and a faithful copy. If you want a nice in-town ride, you can not beat them. They are approx. $1,450.00 (msrp) turn key for the base model. In 1947 I was 14 years old and worked all summer in gas stations in Long Beach CA until I saved up the$97.50 for my new Whizzer. The bicycle shop where I bought the motor installed it for me and I do not remember paying extra for that. I had an old pre-war II bike and it had only a rear wheel brake that was not very efficient. A 14 year old did not care much about brakes but it they did get me in trouble a couple of times when a car turned left in front of me and I hit it. Another time I was going fast down a hill and the signal light turned red on me and I went thru the red light and hit a parked car on the other side of the intersection. I survived those brushes and and had a wonderful time on my Whizzer and rode it to work daily and to school for a couple of years. One day I came out of school to find my Whizzer gone and it was never seen again. Almost sixty years later I found a brand new Whizzer still in the crate at the Carlisle PA swap meet and it brought back many great memories and I had to buy it! Well, three years later I have not taken it out of the crate but I intend to soon and I can not wait to re-kindle those old memories. Gordie Chamberlin

      Great story Gordie!
Thanks for stopping by and the comment. Get that thing out of the crate real soon and let us know how you do.

i own a whizzer ne-5. here in wyoming, no licence or registration of any kind is required. most states have motorized bicycle laws on the books, but do not make them known. a little reasearch can help in this regard. i know, since the local cops harrased me for over a year. just because a cop tells you somthing, doesnt make it so. plus, they have their own agenda. i had one of the small chinese kits, and as a result of fraudulant harrasment, i found that laws allowed a 150cc. displacement motorized bicyclee.[wyoming ss.31-5-102] a moter driven bicycle is not a vehicle.[wyoming ss.31-1-101]

    7. Dennis Topcik Says:

In 1963 I bought a 1951 Whizzer Sportsman. Unlike the regular Whizzer the Sportsman had 20 in. wheels with drum brakes front and rear. In place of the pedels it had solid foot pegs like motercycles have. In order to start it you had to push and jump on. That was a chore in the winter. Illinois streets are often covered with ice then. I paid $100 for that bike and rode it to school almost every day for three years. Now I ride a Harley Davidson which I enjoy very much, but I miss those day on my Whizzer. A 14 year old boy feels like a king on a motorbike. I look forward to building one for my grandkids.

hey thx terry parker i live in cheyenne and always get told by cops that there illegal so thx lots for posting that information

    9. Diana Cade Says:

Saw the Whizzer at my local HD dealer. I think it could be the thing for me. Fun to buzz around town, and exercise the dog. One knee can’t take riding regular bike, plus I’m 69 yrs old. Definitely a possibility.

    11. Terry Ayres Says:

I just bought a Whizzer that I thought was only one year old but the paper work says it is a 1999. It looks brand new and only has 189 miles on it. Did they make the new Whizzers in 1999 and if they did Is there any difference in them as opposed to the new ones.? The air breather on mine is a 3 inch round chrome pot attached to a large rubber hose off the carb and is hanging from the frame with the pot facing out with a center nut . I want to know if I can put a better head on the motor to give it more power and if I do where can I get one and how much would it cost. Also , if I did this would it hurt the motor? I need to have a site that showes everything about how to do any kind of work, including the motorwork on my Whizzer . Do you have one ? Or an onsite complete repair manuel? I notice that sometimes oil will come out of the breather and drip on to the chain gard. Why is that happening? Do you have “tips” for the owners of your bikes? Why do I see some Whizzers made with a chrome speedometer and a chrom RPM gage. Mine has only one black plastic speedometer.
I have many people ever day asking about my Whizzer and I would like to tell them as much as possible so getting this info I am asking for will help me convince them to buy one.
      Sincerely,
      Terry Ayres

    12. Joe Lin Says:

      Terry,
Please tell me the VIN of your bike, which I can check when we made this bike. You can find the VIN under the engine where is a small square black plate or a plate on the head post of front fork behind the front fork cover. Many people bought the 99′ WC1 bikes in 1999-2000, but not many people really rode them. Your seller made some modifications on the bike which you have now. We have made some correct improvements for your bike. I think that the first thing you need a new cylinder kits, which you can use the original Keihin carburetor, dual ignition coil, new compression release vent (breather) to solve the problems of your bike. You need to have a new wirig harness to use the chrome tachometer and speedometer. Please send me your comments to my blog http://www.wc1manufacturer.wordpress.com or e-mails to che3732@ms15.hinet.net, which I can answer your questions more speedy.
      Best regards,
      Joe Lin

BE CAREFULL OF WHAT YOU BYE. I BOUGHT A NEW 2007 WHIZZER AND IT RUSTS VERY EASLY THE SPOKES SAY THER STAINLESS BUT THEY RUST SO DO THE FENDER BRACKETS CALIFORNIA OWNER

    14. terry ayres Says:

I have a 1999 whizzer that i replaced the head on with a head kit. it works well and has a lot of power but now it wants to leak oil where the shaft that the magneto is on ( left side as you set on the bike). If i ride it 30 mph for about 10 miles is leaks a lot. if i ride 20 mph or less it does not use nearly as mouch. i am thinking i have a bad seal. are they hard to fix once the motor is off the bike and are there any special tools needed.

    15. Joe Lin Says:

I didn’t know why the spokes say they are stainless. I never offered the wheels with stainless spokes to WhizzerUSA Dallas, but CP treatment spokes.
The mentioned oil was leaked out from the breather (vent tube), but not from the crankshaft and L/H case. You just need a bigger breather to solve this problem.

    16. terry ayres Says:

about the oil leak. it is NOT coming from the breather. I inspected it closely and it is coming from where the crank is coming out of the motor. is there such a thing as a complete manual for tearing down the motor.
when i bought the upper motor kit it came with a new pressure relief lever but it leaked like crazy. i had to take it apart and put a vicon seal on the shaft then re ping the lever back onto the shaft. now it does not leak.
The oil leak at the motor shaft was never there until i put the new kit on. I think that it gave the bike so much more power that it distroyed the seal. i maybe wrong but it looks as though that is what happened.
I do enjoy riding my Whizzer and get all kinds of great comments on it.

    17. Norman Shafer Says:

MY APOLIGY .I JUST SHOULD HAVE JUST SAID THE SPOKES AND FENDER BRACKETS RUST NORMAN
