Wrongful death complaint cites Billy Lane acted outrageously
Auto Negligence Civil Action
The complaint filed by Dolores J. Morelock, plaintiff, for the wrongful death of her son, Gerald V. Morelock names William D. Lane and Daimlerchrysler Corporation as the defendants. Mrs. Morelock has retained the legal services of Nance Cacciatore and Hamilton a Melbourne based law firm that filed the complaint on October 2 in Brevard County, Florida. The case has not yet been set for trial.
The Parties
Dolores J. Morelock, Plaintiff, Mother of the deceased, Gerald V. Morelock lives in Dayton, Ohio. Her son, Gerry Morelock loved it when the family visited Sebastian, Florida in his youth. He used to tell everyone that one day he would move to Sebastian to live. Dolores J. Morelock is named as the Personal Representative of the Estate of Gerald V. Morelock in the complaint.
William D. Lane, Defendant, known to most as Billy Lane famous chopper builder and owner of Choppers Inc. of Melbourne, Florida gained his popularity appearing on the Discovery Channel’s hit television show “The Great Biker Build-Off” and “Monster Garage”. Billy Lane, 36, was born in Miami, Florida and says that his brother got in interested in motorcycles in his younger years.
Daimlerchrysler Corporation, Defendant, known for Dodge products. The auto maker produces vehicles from small cars to heavy duty pickup trucks. Dodge was one of the sponsors for Billy Lane’s Blood, Sweat & Gears Tour.
The Crash
Wrecked Dodge pickup driven by Billy Lane in fatal crash.
The fatal crash that took the life of Gerry Morelock, son of the Plaintiff, Dolores Morelock happened on State Road A1A, 2.8 Miles south of Melbourne Beach at 9:00 pm. September 4th, 2006 According to the probable cause affidavit filed by investigating Officers of the Florida Highway Patrol. The affidavit states that Billy Lane was operating a 2006 Dodge Mega Cab Pickup at this date and time. Based on sworn witness statements, the defendant was passing three other vehicles at one time and exceeded the speed limit of 50 MPH at the speed of 68 MPH. The defendant continued to pass regardless of northbound traffic.
Billy Lane was drinking prior to the crash at Coconuts on the Beach and traveled to Cheaters where he was drinking additional alcoholic beverages. Mr. Lane left these night clubs and drove to his place of business, Choppers Inc. in Melbourne, FL on his chopper with a passenger, Erin Levens Derrick. Billy Lane changed vehicles and proceeded to travel to his residence with Ms. Derrick The FHP affidavit continues on to say that Defendant, Billy Lane chose to pass in a no passing zone and on a double yellow line. He continued to pass at a high rate of speed. Witnesses stated the the defendant was traveling in excess of 60 MPH while overtaking them. The witnesses stated they could not believe the Defendant was passing on a double yellow no passing zone. All the witnesses stated that the motor scooter’s headlight was on and in operation and that it was in clear view of the oncoming traffic.
Billy Lane continued to overtake the witnesses regardless of the motor scooter traveling northbound on State Road A1A. The Yamaha motor scooter that was driven by Gerry Morelock was on the right side of the northbound lane two feet five inches from the painted white line. Billy veered east in an attempt to avoid a head-on crash with the motor scooter. Defendant, Billy Lane, struck Gerald Morelock head-on with the right front of the Dodge Pickup. Gerry’s motor scooter was forced west upon impact and he was killed instantly by the impact of the Dodge Pickup. The Yamaha motor scooter was destroyed and thrown to the west coming to a rest sixty-four feet away.
The Dodge truck that was being operated by Billy Lane drove onto private property and started to overturn, striking three palm trees knocking them over. The truck continued to overturn traveling two hundred and four feet striking a power pole with its undercarriage knocking it over and came to rest on top of the power pole on the northbound side of State Road A1A.
The Aftermath
FHP Narrative continued: Upon arrival of the Brevard County Fire Department and Paramedics stated that Billy Lane was in the driver seat. One of the Fire Paramedics stated that he could detect the oder of an alcoholic beverage from the driver’s side of the vehicle while performing medical treatment on Mr. Lane. Billy Lane was transported by ambulance to Holmes Medical Regional Center in Melbourne, FL. Two FHP Troopers were dispatched to the hospital for the purpose of withdrawal of a blood sample from the Defendant and were present at the emergency room to request a blood sample at 10:42 pm. Mr. Lane refused.
The Trooper read Implied Consent and he still refused. The Trooper advised Billy Lane due to the serious nature of this traffic crash, they would be taking a sample of his blood for the D.U.I. Investigation. A registered nurse then drew the blood from the defendant and it was submitted into evidence and sent to the F.D.L.E. Crime lab for analyst.
The Arrest
On Friday, September 22, 2006 the results of the BAC were returned from the crime lab to the investigating Officer. The result was 0.192% which is more than twice the legal limit of impairment for Billy Lane. The results revealed Billy Lane to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at the time of his traffic crash. The defendant caused this traffic crash by driving the 2006 Dodge pickup in a willful and wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property and is guilty of reckless driving ( 316.192 ) The defendant chose to pass on a double yellow center line and was guilty of improper passing ( 316.0875.2 ). The defendant, Billy Lane, caused the death of a human being by the reckless operation of his vehicle, vehicular homicide ( 782.071.a ). The defendant was driving the 2006 Dodge Pickup while intoxicated to the Blood Alcohol Level of 0.192 percent and caused the death of a human being, Gerald Vernon Morelock, which is D.U.I. Manslaughter ( 316.193.3. (c)3 ). William D. Lane had a revoked driver license in the State of North Carolina for refusing to submit to a breath test on June 25, 2006.
The State of North Carolina suspended the defendant’s Florida driver license for refusal to submit to a chemical test. The suspension is through July 13, 2007. The defendant is aware of this suspension due to North Carolina taking his Florida driver license at the time of his arrest in that sate.
The defendant is guilty of driving while license is suspended in the state of North Carolina and drove in a negligent operation of a motor vehicle and caused the death of a human being, Gerald Vernon Morelock, and is guilty of a felony of the third degree.
On Monday September 25, 2006 at 1:00 pm Billy Lane turned himself in at the FHP headquarters on HWY 520 in Cocoa, Florida. He was accompanied by 4 attorneys and charged DUI Manslaughter, DUI Serious Bodily Injury and Driving while License Suspended/Revoked With Serious Injury or Death. Billy Lane was also required to turn in his passport and is not allowed to drink alcohol or drive.
Mr. Lane is scheduled to appear in court for these charges on October 27, 2006 in Brevard County.
The Wrongful Death Complaint
A complaint filed for the wrongful death of Gerald V. Morelock is based on the following:
Allegations Common To All Counts
- The defendant’s decision to repetitively engage in such dangerous conduct suggests a higher level of culpability than would be present in a case involving a first time offender.
- The defendant, Daimlerchrysler Corporation at all material times was the owner of the 2006 Dodge Pickup truck.
- At the time of collision, the defendant, William D. Lane, was operating the promotional 2006 Dodge pickup truck which was owned by Daimlerchrysler Corporation, and had been provided along with other promotional vehicles to the defendant, William D. Lane, for his use.
- The Defendant, Daimlerchrysler Corporation, received an economic benefit as a result of the Defendant, William D. Lane, operating the promotional vehicles on the roadways of the State of Florida as well as other states.
- That as a direct and proximate result of the aforesaid wrongful acts of the defendant, William D. Lane, Gerald V. Morelock died.
Liability of Daimlerchrysler
- The Defendant, William D. Lane, had a history of disobeying traffic laws, receiving numerous moving citations, and being reckless, incompetent or unfit driver.
- The entrustment for economic benefit of the Dodge truck by the defendant, Daimlerchrysler Corporation, to the defendant, William D. Lane, created an appreciable risk of harm to others, including the deceased, Gerald V. Morelock, and a concomitant or corresponding duty on the part of the defendant, Daimlerchrysler Corporation.
More basis of claim
- William D. Lane, had actual knowledge of the wrongfulness of the conduct and the high probability that injury or damage to another individual would result and, despite that knowledge, intentionally pursued that course of conduct.
- The Defendant’s, William D. Lane, conduct was so reckless or wonting in care that it constituted a conscious disregard or indifference to the life, safety, or rights of persons exposed to such conduct, such as the decedent, Gerald V. Morelock.

The following statement is taken from the web site Beach Rider and is used by permission of the author. The author is an attorney that wishes to remain anonymous for the simple reason he does not want feedback on the issue. However, when I read the comment regarding this case, I felt that it had a great deal to offer to this article. The author was contacted and has given written permission for use.
First, remember that a criminal charge does nothing to redress injuries suffered by the victim or, as in the Morelock case, the victim’s survivors. Even the style of a criminal case — The People of the State of Florida (or, the State) v. Billy Lane — suggests the action is brought by the state to punish someone who broke the laws of the state. In other words, it’s the state seeking redress on behalf of the state, not the victims. And that makes sense. When someone commits a crime, isn’t the crime against the standards of behavior set by the people through their legislature? Isn’t the crime itself against the state?
So, what is left for the victim? Nothing but money. It’s imperfect, I know, it’s kind of creepy as well. But money is all the law allows as recompense. There is nothing else.
You cannot deny the Morelock family suffered, right? You cannot deny that they suffered at the hand of Billy Lane (assuming the evidence bears out the early reports). The civil law provides one avenue for the family to seek some sort of redress, and that’s a civil lawsuit. And it provides only one remedy. Money. How much is enough?
The right amount isn’t what will enrich the Morelocks. Let’s face it, they lost a dear family member. Do you think any of them will ever feel rich, even if they are awarded a large sum of money? Put it another
way: don’t you think every one of the surviving Morelocks would trade every penny they get plus every penny they’ve ever earned to have Gerry back? Wouldn’t you if it were your brother?
No, this isn’t about what they can get. It’s about imposing a punishment proportionate to the offense and sufficient to let the offender know his actions have consequences. He pays his debt to society for the harm he did to society by doing time (or paying a fine or doing community work), but he pays for how he harmed the family (if he did) in dollars and cents. It’s not enough. But it’s all there is.
So, why is Daimler Chrysler in this? It’s not just their deep pockets.
And its not because anyone is claiming the truck was defective. This is not a products liability case, it’s a negligent entrustment case.
They gave Billy Lane the pick-up truck and, by most accounts, retained title to it as part of their sponsorship deal. They made money from his use of the truck. But what if they entrusted the truck to him knowing he had a history of drunk driving? What if they ignored his history because they could make money from his use of the truck? Isn’t Daimler Chrysler just a little culpable? Don’t you think they bear at least some of the responsibility?
Chrysler is being held to the same standard as anyone who loans his car to someone knowing that person has a history of using it recklessly and in a way that endangers lives. We all have the duty not to do that.
You’d be held to the same standard if you loaned your car to someone you knew had a history of drunk driving. You have a duty to the other people on the road not to entrust your car to someone who you know is likely to mishandle it and cause injury.
Notice, the duty is not to loan your car to someone you know has a problem. it’s a different duty because you know the person is likely to (or has a history of) mishandling the car. If you don’t have affirmative knowledge of their history of misuse, you probably wouldn’t be culpable.
Did Daimler Chrysler know of Billy Lane’s history when they game him the truck? I don’t know. But you can see how they might be, right?
For now, that’s all that matters. The truth will come out through the civil trial process. Let it take its course. See what it reveals.
Reserve judgment until all the facts are in.
I’m glad the motorcycle community is taking a healthy interest in this case. Let us all hope for justice for all concerned.

Well done, here’s some additional information for you.
The scooter in question was a 1983 yamaha riva 180.
With it’s 171cc engine displacement, it’s a interstate legal
and capable scooter, the term moped is incorrect as it defines
a less than 50cc engine displacment and is not interstate legal.
The passenger in mr. lanes truck also smelled of alcohol, the
ambulance that took mr. lane to the hospital did not report
smelling alcohol on/near mr. lane while in transit. The
female passenger was flown to the trauma center due to initially
not having feeling/sensation to her legs/lower back.

Is anybody old enough to remember the State of Ohio vs. Sam Shepperd. Shepperd was charged with murder….his wife. Mr. Shepperd’s Sixth Amendment Rights were violated because of the information in the newspapers, on TV Networks. There was only CBS,NBC and ABC. NO INTERNET.
Information is capable of prejudicing the jury. New stories are not subject to the rules of evidence. The information in a highly publicized trial that is based on inadmissible evidence or comport with societies pressure is capable of prejudicing the jury pool. A criminal like Billy Lane that is so NOTORIOUS that an impartial jury cannot be seated.
Judges will not seat jurors without screening the effects of what they have read and watched on the news. I bet Kepler Funk Attorney of record for Billy Lane will ask for change of venue. I will be surprised if the criminal trial is held in Brevard County. Mr.Funk will also ask if you ride a motorcycle and second if you have read any of the Blog sites.
I received E-Mail from Bruce Rossemeyer Daytona Harley Davidson and they said Billy Lane will be there next week-end to sign autographs and have a booth set up……then it says if Billy Lane is not in court someplace for his recent accident. Mike, I did not know that Mr. Lane was just loaned those 3 automobiles form Dodge. They were registered to Dodge and had Michigan tags. I did not know that they were not leased when I told you Chryslerdalmier required $300,000 liability insurance. When we leased our Dodge we had to buy $300,000. Call any insurance company and they will confirm that $300,000 is the required to lease a car or truck. I am sure Mr. Funk is reading your site every day. We learn more here than the Florida Today reports. It is pretty safe to say Billy Lane has ruined his life.
What does everyone mean when they say Indian Larry would be so mad and disappointed? Indian Larry is dead..RIP. Indian Larry finally saw the light. Check out Billy Lane’s Chop Fiction book. You can rest assured that the FHP and District Attorney will be using that in some way. Front and back inside covers are nothing but driving violations. I was someplace reading online and Billy Lane was showboating on his chopper the night he got pulled over in North Carolina when he was there for the SmokeOut and ran into somebodies car and left the scene.
Wonder if Billy will show up next weekend at Daytona?

This accident is a tragedy, but not a surprise. If you
went to the old Choppers Inc website or read Billy’s
book, Chop Fiction, the only question was whether Billy
would kill himself before he took an innocent life. On
9/4/06, Gerald Morelock became the unfortunate but
entirely predictable answer to this question. I have no
sympathy for Billy Lane. Decent people like Gerald
Morelock have a right to be able to ride a motorcycle on
a public road without being murdered by some scumbag
like Billy Lane. Let him sit in prison where he belongs.

the guy who KILLED him got a ticket for FAILURE to yield!

This whole thing is a sad shame. No doubt, this man did not
deserve to die the way that he did. I cant help feeling however,
that some people are just on the “lets hang billy lane kick”.
First of all, none of you know the man that was killled. None
of us know who or how he was in life. Second, none of us know
billy.
Ill tell you what man, billy lane will get what is coming his
way but I wonder what some of you finger pointing holier than
thou types have done in your own past. To me its just a sad

Then again, most of you probably voted for bush. Billy Lane made

No matter what you thought of Billy Lane prior to this, he is just another drunken dirtbag. I have a friend who has totalled two bikes because he was drunk and has DUI’s. He won’t learn and I won’t ride with him again. He is lucky to be alive but won’t stop drinking. Some people can’t learn. Billy Lane needs to spend time in jail, maybe he will learn. I threw my Choppers Inc hat in the trash

Anybody else notice a theme here??? Even if Billy’s lying dirtbag lawyer (actually to be precise – lying dirtbag lawyer is redundant) pulls off a miracle and keeps him out of prison where he belongs – his career is over. His fans are throwing away the Choppers Inc items that they paid their hard earned money for. I took my Choppers Inc Aluminum Six Gun Shift Knob (over $50 including shipping) out of my 70 Trans Am and threw it in the garbage. It will never be cool again to ride Billy’s bikes or wear his clothes. Billy threw his reputation in the trash can the night he murdered Gerald Morelock.

I can’t believe all of you. I don’t know of a single person that hasn’t drank and drove at least once in their life. I’m not condoning billy’s actions but I met him in phoenix and he is one of the nicest guys in the world no ego down to earth artists and he made a big mistake I can’t say the same thing couldn’t have happend to me or one of my best friends or family. no bull things happen he will have to live with it for the rest of his life not you. he will pay the price It’s too bad someone else paid the ultimate price a no win situation.

This goes beyond ever having a drink or doing wrong in the past. The sad truth is that ……..Billy had/has a problem, a sickness……..alcoholic. He needed help and chose not to seek it and destroyed anothers life. Ssad.

Joe makes a good point above. There, but for some kind of luck, go I.
My personal feeling is, the roads are dangerous, we take our lives into our hands whenever we get on them. We know the risks of doing so. My personal opinion is DUI laws are a version of the nanny state.
However, if you kill someone, due to negligence or outright malice, you ought to be punished. Doesn’t matter how you went about killing the person. You kill someone, you get punished.
So, to all you “moralizers,” it ain’t the drinking that killed Mr. Morelock, who by every single account I’ve read, was a perfectly fine addition to society. It was a decision made by a driver. The alcohol didn’t make the decision. Lane did. The fact that he allowed himself to act on the decision, that was probably the alcohol, but I’ll bet anything Lane would’ve at least considered the decision had he been straight.
The plain and simple fact of the matter is Lane thought he was above the law. Take my license away? Screw you, I’m still driving. No passing? Screw you, I’ll pass when I want. Maybe he wanted to get laid so bad he just felt he had to take chances. With or without alcohol, Billy Lane is an idiot.

To many of us have screamed bloody murder for higher penatlies
when a cager has killed a rider thru carelessness.
Billy Lane should be held to that same standard or even higher because of his influence on so many lives. I hope this doesnt become a case if his getting off because of who he is or who he knows.

i stumbled across this and it was a good read. i have followed this story with interest as i ride and drive. i have mailed a million t-shirts to friends and they all say the same thing; ‘what a bust.’. i thought he was an ok guy but we all make mistakes. this one is tragic though. i dont think its proper to gang up on the guy. he is accused of commiting a crime and he will have his day in court. it doesnt diminish his genius as a builder any more than this incident makes him an awful person. he just failed to think. as do many people. however in our society it is fashionable to kick people who have achieved a measure of fame when they are down. ‘everybody loves a winner, but when you lose you lose alone’. i havent thrown away anything and i still wear my shirts. just because the guy is a world class bike builder doesnt make him a saint. it was what it was; a tragedy for both people. thanks for listening….

The SA that is handling this case at the time told me that typically a case like this will not go to trial for about 18 months. He did not mention any type of plea bargain, however he told me that he could not go any further than waht was already contained in the file.
Idea as to defense? Who knows what K. Funk will pull.

Many have commented and possibly even debated over the vehicle that Gerald Morelock was riding. The news papers certainly had no right calling it a “moped” as pointed out by visitor aj in a comment above, this was actually a motor scooter that was Interstate legal.
It saddens me even more as I read in the FHP report that Mr. Morelock was in fact only two feet, five inches from the white line. Meaning that he was even riding over to the side of the road.
When the witnesses point out that Billy Lane continued to pass with disregard to the northbound traffic, I wonder if he was trying to squeeze between the cars on the right of him and the single light that approached? Purely speculation on my part on this.

Dodge did, in fact, own the vehicles that Billy Lane had in his possession. They did own the 2006 Dodge pickup that Billy Lane was driving the night that he took the life of Gerald Morelock, an innocent man.
Your concept of them leasing the vehicles to Mr. Lane would have been a better move on their part, but they did not. It is strange however to read in forums the way people assume that because the suit names Daimlerchrysler Corporation as one of the defendants. The lawyers and plaintiff are called money hungry, while this is not the case at all. I even read a post where someone says they should sue the maker of his jeans. Big difference! The jeans that Billy was wearing, he purchased with his own money and they have no bearing on the case what so ever.
However, so that others can completely understand what has happened here with the Dodge issue, let me paint a picture.
Billy Lane did not own the pickup, Dodge did.
Say you own a brand new truck. Would you, being the owner, allow someone that has been known to drive recklessly use it?
Furthermore, if you did allow them to use it and found that they had been arrested for a DUI. Would you not go directly to where your truck was and pick it up? I think there is no person that is reading this blog that would not retrieve their vehicle from a person like that straight away.
So, this does make the company guilty of negligence, clearly.
I have to wonder, myself if Billy will be at Destination Daytona. I think if anything, that the booth will be there, but Billy will not. Bruce Rossmeyer is a good business man. He has proved that in his success. I think that he would somehow find a way to cancel the appearance of Billy Lane and not have space available for Choppers Inc. booth. It will be interesting to see what decision Mr. Rossmeyer makes. Ultimately, the decision will rest in his hands. In my mind, good business procedure would dictate a strong no.

I have heard on another website that the driver of the moped was nearly as drunk as Billy. Fate has a weird way of sneaking up on you. Not saying it is alright but the shoe could have been on the other foot if a pedestrian would have walked in front of the moped. Most anybody who has posted on here has drank and drove at least once. It is a terrible thing but could happen to anybody. Thanks to Mike for the info as well no place else has this much info.

Currently the trials dates are set for:
Feb. 2nd for the criminal trial. This will most likely be postponed because Billy Lane has changed the attorney in this case.
Feb. 7th for the civil action. It appears that this date is still a go as of now.

As an addict in recovery I understand the the wrong that is caused by addiction, Billy Lane has made a grave mistake that he will have to live with for the rest of is life. Everything in this world happens for a reason, although not aways understood it still happens. I’m sorry for the lose of life, however life still goes on. Billy must go on. How ever this turns out, is exactly the way its supposed too. As for has this change the way I feel about Billy Lane? Not a pit I still where his had, I’m still building a bike with his Style and I will look foward to seeing him at show. All you head hunters out there act like your shit don’t stink, and you have been siants all you natural lives. As for me I made many many mistakes in my life and what I’ve learned as that you have to keep getting up and move on. I wish Billy the best and It will turn out the way its supposed too.

This for sure is a no way win win situation, 3 people involved 1 dead the other 2 ruined for life. I’m still a bike rider and yes I myself have had drinks and got on my bike /truck which that doesn’t happen anymore after I lost some friends from the two mixtures. Very stupid on my own part but a blessing I never hurt anyone. Thoughts and prayers go out to everybody.

The dates are correct. However, they are still set for docket sounding and calendar call. I believe we will hear some motions in the civil case on Wednesday and it may be set for trial after that, but unlikely.

I say this will be a easy slam dunk for “SAMMY” and I am pulling for him as I am pulling for the Morelock’s to prevail. Everyone seemed to feel the need or burning desire to wish ” Billy Baby” a happy birthday. I am with Norm on this…….if everything I have seen officially documented on this case is correct and Billy had no drivers license, I agree that they should fry his ass. I believe in sticking by a biker……….but not one like Lane who had no regard for human life. That fateful night Lane took Mr. Morelock’s life should never happened and would not have happened if Lane had regard for the law. Lane saving his yellow driving violations, issued tickets show he had no regard for the law. It was kind of like flipping the bird at law enforcement officials and every other driver on the highway. The tickets on the inside of the book cover for “CHOP FICTION”. I am sorry Mr. Morelock will no longer be celebrating birthdays on this earth or holidays with his loved ones.

Let’s say that a key fact speak for itself, blood alcohol level. Now in America we have the best legal system in the world and yes it has some big flaws. I’ve sat on juries and know why defense attorneys love them, enough said about that. I’m a successful business owner, college graduate, biker and have always had a problem with Billy Lane. Watch any episode of biker build off with Billy Lane in it and count the number of times you see him with a beer in his hand or next to him. Let the lawyers argue their case, Billy Lane knows what he did and will use all of his resources to minimize his penalty. If he were not a celebrity he would not be getting any public support. This situation does show the raw underbelly of the world we live in.

We all know that Billy messed up by drinking and driving, but what no one is really talking about on here or in the papers or anywhere else for that matter, is the fact that Morelock was over the legal limit as well. His BAL was hire then Billys.. and Morelock had a long record of traffic violations as well.. Im not saying that Billy Should go free but we do need to put all the facts out there they were BOTH DUI and unfortunately Morelock paid with his life.. and as far as his mother she was trying to basically have her son baker acted about a year before this all happened..They were both wrong!! As far as the court dates.. Billy goes to court for the DUI Manslaughter charge on this Friday 16th.. and i believe that he goes to court on the 19th wich is the following Monday for the families Lawsuit..

I try to keep this blog based on facts and I think I have done a pretty good job. If you wish to comment in someones defense, it would benefit both you and the person you are attempting to defend by knowing what you are talking about.
Not only do I try to keep all post factual, I try to remain unbiased in reporting the facts. Comments, however, can be a different story. While I do not wish to show any bias for one side or the other here, I do feel the need to correct you on what you think to be factual.
First off, no one here has tried to conceal the fact that Mr. Morelock’s BAC was found to be above the legal limit. However, you saying that it has not been reported is not true. The story was posted on this blog and was also covered in the Florida Today newspaper. IF you had of read one of these articles, you would have known that your statement as to Mr. Morelock’s BAL being hire (that’s a root beer isn’t it?) is not correct. Fact is that Mr. Morelock’s BAC was determined to be .133 and Mr. Lane was found to have a BAC of .192. I might also add that Mr. Lane’s blood was not taken for over 45 minutes after the crash because he refused.
As far as Mr. Morelock’s driving record, being that you are so up on this, how many “criminal traffic” violations has he had. Mr Morelock’s driver license is still valid to this day and remains valid until 2010. Fact remains that Mr. Lane broke the law, several laws on September 4th 2006 and for those reasons Mr. Morelock is no longer with us.
Now on to your being misinformed on the supposed baker act against Gerald Morelock. The incident is recorded to have happened in 2000. That would mean there has been a 6 year span since. Not 1 year as you claim. Because I do not know ALL of the facts on this, other than the date. I will leave it at that. It really has no bearing on what happened regardless.
Mr. Lane is currently scheduled for a docket sounding (calendar call) on March 16, 2007 on his criminal charges and the civil case is scheduled for trial August 20, 2007.
I am not sure where you get your information, but you should consider a different source. Billy Lane is not on trial here, that will happen in court. I think that he will do much better with his choice of attorneys than with uninformed people attempting to defend him.

Well, I feel very relieved and fortunate in the fact that Sandie hasn’t graced this blog with her ******* opinions since 3/1. The way I see it, if we begin (and continue) to give her inaccurate dates and locations for Billy’s hearings and trials, we can literally have her running all over the country with her garlic, wooden stakes and holy water.
I see people here bashing Billy for who he is and referencing his book “Chop Fiction”. I read the book…big deal. Has anyone see “Blood, Sweat & Gears”? Wow, how about that…criminal Billy has done some GOOD things!
I truly feel bad for both parties involved. I am a strong opponent of DWI, and I believe neither one of them should have been on the road that night. Billy will pay the price for his poor judgement, in one form or another. But, since Mr. Morelock’s BAC was over the legal limit, his poor judgement to ride that night cost him his life. It is what it is.
So, with that in mind, the healine should have read, “Two drunk drivers die in collision”.
My opinion – that’s the beauty of living in America.

I live Indialantic near where Billy had this accident. I was hit by an 83 year old man driving a new Lincon . He had hit me head on making an illeagle left hand turn. I woke up in the trama room in Melbourne. He was driving under the influence of senility. He had car insurance and no valad drivers license but he had auto insurance. They didn’t do a thing to him and I still can’t walk right to this day. I hurt constantly and have many days where walking is a challange. I got some money but he got away scott free. Where is the justice in that. Why isn’t he in jail or going to court facing what Billy is facing. If both parties were under the influence they are equally guilty.

It would matter if the drunk scooter driver illegally caused or contributed directly to the accident, but Billy didn’t cross the double yellow going way too fast in a big pickup because Morelock was juiced. Morelock’s blood alcohol content had as much to do with his death as being on a scooter instead of in a Hummer did, or having the misfortune of being in the way of a wild man over his head with booze in a truck did. Okay, give Morelock a ticket for DUI, except it will have to be posthumous. He committed no other offense and violated no traffic laws from what the witnesses apparently said.

Goofy Gary, anyone can go to the Brevard Clerk of Courts for everything filed by everyone in both the criminal and civil case. How does this affect your life bob? If you took alcohol out of this tragedy the reponses towards billy lane would be exactly the same. If billy had a legal license the reponse would be the same. The only difference is people would have to beat this statement to death instead, “YOU CAN”T CROSS A DOUBLE YELLOW, SO GO TO JAIL BILLY LANE!”
Who on earth would plead guilty, close their business and go to jail if they were in this situation. NOBODY!!
I agree with you and hope billy serves some time to remember this, I’m just saying the guy is doing what we would all do if the shoe was on the other foot. The one thing that can be learned is how devastating alcohol can be. It seems to me that a lot of people responding to this tragedy seem to enjoy misfortune and heartache especially when we can put a name with a face, and that my friend is sick! It’s o.k. to condemn others as long as it’s not me or you because that would be unfair.
If your family member had been killed you might want to see the guy selling some products or sh!t since you have a civil case coming down the road that involves a high profile defendant. Money won’t turn back the hands of time and erase what happened, but it’s the only means we use in this country to achieve some sort of justice.
Nothing will change after the trials. There are no winners.

I’m going to have to agree with Iowalorider. For all of us armchair lawyers out there ,this ones a no brainer. Even if you take alcohol out of the equation the evidence will still speak for itself. Crossing the double line just in itself would be enough for a conviction. Theres no way this case will ever go to trial.What could possibly be used in Billy’s defence.There just isn’t any.All I can say is that He’s very luckey that he only got charged with manslauter. Love hin or hate him the fact remains,it was his choice and no one elses to get behind the wheel. Like they say good people can do bad things!!This would be a very good chance for Billy to come clean and use this tradgity to help bring awareness to the fact this is real,and if you don’t think it can happen to you,your dead wrong.Just ask Billy!

While I agree on many points being made, I think that we are getting the two cases crossed up here.
As far as the criminal case you can not remove the alcohol, simply because of the charges that were filed by the State of Florida, DUI/Manslaughter. While I agree there is strong evidence against Lane, there are many technical questions that may have not been properly documented on the traffic homicide report. Lane’s new attorney is known for technical law and loop holes and he is digging. Fact still remains that until it goes to court, no one will know and anything else is speculation on both cases.
I have seen and heard of cases were a person does plead guilty or no contest and prays for the forgiveness of the court and those harmed by the defendant. Those cases, however, have been low profile cases.

I have liked Billy Lane since day one as a bike builder and contributing to my favorite past time which is all about motorcycles. However Billy got a big ego, became to big for his own shoes and thought that he was immune from the laws that make our roads safe. My hobbie today is to stop people from drinking and driving and when they flip me off and tell me to shove it, a 911 call is placed and I remove them from the road with a trip in a black and white. I do not do this in spite, but because I have a right to travel in safety on any and all roads. All of us have a right to travel in safety on the roads. Billy Lane is guilty of driving under the influence, driving like a fucking moron and thinking he is above the law. It puzzles me that with all his fame that he could not have spent fifty bucks for a taxi ride. Fifty bucks could have saved someones life. Alcoholism takes from rich and poor alike, young or old, famous or not, greedy and giving, honest or crook, tough or weak and it does not matter. The real irony is that Billy Lane lived for two wheels, but yet took the life of a human being that was following the rules of the road. I would hope that the end result of this is that Billy Lane can forgive himself and work on bettering his life rather than ruining his life as well, taking two lives to alcoholism. Dodge Executives are prostitutes and always have been. I seriously doubt they gave much consideration to Mr. Lane’s driving record as they stood to piggy back off of his fame, since their company has been pushing their shit cars and trucks on hard working honest Americans for decades and care only about a bottom line, nothing else. If DaimlerChrysler were as passionate about their vehicles as Billy was about his bikes, then I would stand in line to buy a Dodge truck. Dodge should pay the family of the victim every single dime of what they made off of exploiting the fame of Billy Lane….but they cannot and will not offer a cent as they are cowards and not real patriots. Dodge trucks were once made by Americans and people that stood for building quality, but that was taken away by greedy executives and bean counters who would rather export the jobs away from hard working Americans and send the jobs to Mexico and still sell their low quality vehicles to Americans who are too damn stupid to see this. Not a single Dodge in built in America. Toyota, Honda and Nissan employ more Americans at American auto plants than Dodge, Chevy and Ford have in the last two decades and their quality is based on customer satisfaction, not on executive satisfaction of fat pay rolls and fooling Americans. Chrysler was bailed out by the Government with our tax dollars after it almost went bankrupt with Lee Iacocca in the late 70′s and the arguement was then that it would save American jobs, however the plan all along was to export American jobs offshore.
If an American car or truck is not made on American soil by American people, then do not buy it. Be a patriot and boycott Dodge and buy a Toyota. The Japanese auto makers support more American families with living wages than any of the big three. In a recent statement by Bill Ford on national TV…he asked that Americans support Ford. I had to laugh as here is a spoiled brat that has never worked an honest day in his life and asking Americans to buy his low quality garbage to support his shares in Ford so they are not devalued to nothing. I believe that Billy Lane is guilty and if he walks on these charges, he will again kill in a motor vehicle and it may be you that he kills. He is in denial and acting like a self centered drunk who thinks only of himself. If I am to die I would like it to be of old age and not being hit by some famous bike builder or anyone else that has socio pathic tendencies and thinks that they own the road at my expense.
I will pray for the soul of Billy Lane as he is going to need a lot of us praying for him as well as the family of the victim. My heart goes out to them and also to Billy Lane. I would like to add that his actions have also now affected the lives and livelyhoods of all of his employees and the people that have jobs at Choppers Inc. I think that no one will remember Billy Lane by the time he gets out of prison at the same age as the man he killed.

I have a friend that was killed last year by a drunk driver. My friend riding his motorcycle and the guy who hit him was so wasted that he could not stand. He just got sentenced to 32 months….that is less than 3 years….to add insult to injury he had been convicted of 3 DUI’s in Washington state …but the prosecutor found out that his total DUI count was over 18. Yes eighteen DUI’s…..it is a fucking crime…..now he is going to sit for another two years and be back on the road again…having destroyed many lives, broken a family like Mr. Morelocks family….all that pain and suffering.
Crysler just announced that they are going to do lifetime warranties on their cars now…..I find this sickening…but perhaps the only way to sell their junky cars and trucks… Why not have an original idea like building a car or truck that is made to last? It seems Toyota figured that out in the 60′s and now are the largest in the world…and people keep buying them…
A very good friend of mine worked for Crysler…I am leaving the H out of the name as it does not deserve to be spelled correctly….anyway when he got his first job out of college…he was hired in the customer service dept. His job was to ignore and deliberately stall complaints, throw them away and to hide any and all documentation about the complaints as to avoid having to abide by the LEMON LAW…which states that after so many complaints…the manufacturer would have to buy the car back at the original paid price and reimburse the financing costs and the costs that the car owner incurred to drive the shitty built car. My friend left one day..due to that he could not lie to people. Crysler still continues that policy to date…Daimler should never have bought them out….as they do make some great cars…and trucks and have a golden reputation…..it is like having your college kid date a washed up whore….makes no sense.
Crysler has convinced me to NEVER buy one of their trucks….for those who have to have a truck….I rode in a brand new Tundra and a brand new Nissan big truck and they are both built like a rock….
Bill Ford of the Ford Motor Company a while back came on to announce to the American People to support Ford or they were going to go into bankruptcy…….and begged people to buy Fords…….if he had pulled his head out of his ass and spent as much money on redeveloping his current project rather than spend millions of dollars on research and development on the new sports car that no one can afford….and pleased his former and curent customers…then he would be doing alright…but his rich boy EGO got the best of him and he wanted a new toy….

Firstly I’d like to send my condolences to the Morelock family for their tragic loss of Gerry.
Now Billy has made a big mistake by drink driving and taking the life of a young man, but I fail to see how some of you people can throw stones and persecute another human being. I know that Billy Lane has made the ultimate mistake in life and taken the life of another human being, and am DAMN sure his conscience with remind him every moment of every day that he well and truly stuffed up.
With all this said….. No one here has the right to condemn and wish ill on Mr. Billy Lane.
If you you do think you are perfect ! Than you really need to have a good, hard look at yourself and see that we all make mistakes, forgive and get on with life..
Who’s to say what is a fair punishment is for this crime ????
Maybe Jail time ???? Maybe a lifetime of sorrow, misery,persecution and regret ( on Billy’s behalf)

DAVE….Whoa dude….that is harsh….
I grew up around bikers….hard core bikers…perhaps some of the greatest people I know…or have ever known…tattoos…scary looking to some folks… I am still friends with bikers who are club members, still hard core and I can show up in a business suit and tie and they hug me and sit down and talk to me as if I were wearing boots, t shirt and jeans…no judgement at all..I went the “straight edge” route at 23 in my life and told my buddies that I wanted to do something else than just ride and party and every single one of them wished me well and I am still friends with them, their families and hang out with them…
The people I have no respect for at all….are the 50 some crowd….rich urban bikers…they have all the leathers, garb by HD and look like the friggin Village People and everytime I see them I want to jump up and start singing that lame song….YMCA….with the three other bozos in that band…..it is sickening….not cause they want to ride bikes….I dig that part…I think it is cool that people want to ride motorcycles…young, old , rich or poor…black, yellow or white….does not matter to me….any person on two wheels is a friend of mine…
The people that buy a bike, leathers and look like some creep out of the Willie G collection from the HD catalog and then their attitude changes…and it is like a friggin Haloween costume party….they are the ones that make me ill…..the 1% bikers I have met…most have told me that the last person they want to hang out with or ride with is the guy who pretends to be something that he is not….someone that is acting cool and tough and wants to start shit……likes to push people around and perhaps pack some heat or a big knife….which he is likely to cut off his own pee pee with due to not having a clue how to use it….all bad ass and all attitude….even more sickening….I was on a rally and wore shorts after I parked my bike…with a Hawaiian shirt on…flip flops as I am not going to walk around in 100 degree weather with black leathers on to look tough….for riding…a must as I would not be caught dead on a bike wearing a pair of shorts and flip flops…but after riding 500 miles in a day in 100 degrees…I wanted to cool off….three RUBS ran into me..literally….one of the guys pushed me…and I took him to his knees…and then his two other friends…did not hit them..just took them to the ground…how I am not sure….it was not about me being a bad ass…but about showing these guys that it is not about the looks…it is about the person….two cops happened to have seen the whole thing go down and ran up to me and asked me if I was OK….these guys attitude sucked….and had I been with the real hard core guys I grew up with…they would have stomped these guys on the pure principal of it.
I am not into violence…but some people need to perhaps be schooled a bit….it is friggin sad that people have to be such posers…
When I bought my last HD bike…I joined the local HOG chapter….did ONE ride with them….that ride ended quickly….we were riding down the road and some guy was broken down on the side of the road and flagging us to stop..I was in the outside formation and could not pull over due to that I had some real bozos with 40 miles on their bikes….riding like lemmings…so I waited for opposing traffic to go by and ran across the road and rode back to help that biker….he was grateful…I stayed and helped him out….it was a little problem…and I had the part….and he and I rode together for a few hours that afternoon …..We enjoyed the road together and I met a new person…a real person…we are still friends and that was 8 years ago…the point I am making is that being a biker and enjoying the life is to meet new people…share time with people and getting to know them….When he found out that I was a suit and tie guy…he was blown away….he would have never figured..but we ended up riding thousands of miles together..I know his wife and kids and my life is richer for this reason….. all those HOG member….(high on glue) do not appeal to me….not my scene….I still today ride in a bright hawaiian shirt when I ride and I personally hate black T shirts… LOUD SHIRTS AND LOUD PIPES save lives….
So Dave….those guys with the tattoos…99 % of them are great honest hard working people…..if you ever break down in any town and are down on your luck and or short a few bucks to get to your destination….a biker bar with guys who are tattooed and scary looking will most likely be your best friends as the guys at the HOG chapter or some yuppie group of arrogant and ignorant bastards will treat you like a leppar..and call the police as you are menace and not one of them cause you do not have a gold card shoved up your ass… and long hair….WOW…that is harsh dude….are you one of the guys in the ending scene of Easy Rider…with no teeth…some inbred hillbilly….who does his own sister or the local sheep rapist….? I could go on and on about how you are the scariest kind of person in America….the first ammendment of the constitution is designed to protect that one citizen that does not agree with anyone on anything…it is what gives us freedom from assholes like you….not just saying this about you…but the whole premise that if we start to judge people cause they do not conform…then we have in that sense lost our freedom as Americans….
America as we knew it is deteriorating….daily it gets worse…America was built and became strong due to that people could be individuals and could agree to disagree, we had the freedom to choose, we joined forces and became strong on our similarities…long hair , short hair, black, indian, white, asian…we all came to this country to escape oppression from “the man” in other countries and decided we had had enough….
But today we have a patriot act ( means that dirt bag long haired tattooed people no longer have civil rights due to how we look) Our leaders…all criminals….have exported all of our jobs offshore, are funding a war about oil in Iraq sacrificing many American kids lives…(one of my best friends lost his son there last year)….it is a bad vietnam re-run…but for oil and friends of Bush and Cheney to make and steal as much money from the American people as possible…over 10 Billion dollars per week since it started….all borrowed from the Chinese Government…, we have an epidemic of meth having destroyed most of American youth…it is happening all over.. three of my cousins look like they are walking corpses…at ages under 35…no teeth….kids all over the country by different women…in and out of jail for domestic violence, One of the worst health systems in the world…we are internationally ranked at 37 at the moment…., our elderly are eating dog food and not being provided for with what the need to survive on a basic human level as Bush and Condesnding Rice claimed that the elderly needed to learn to manage their money better….I watched that hearing on national TV and I was so pissed I wanted to kick a hole in the TV…..saying this to the elderly that are getting $650 dollars a month to pay rent, eat, pay bills….FUCKING SICK…, VA has been cut more in the last two terms for funding than in the last 40 presidents….read a bit and go to truthout.org and wake up…BUSH and Cheney, Rice and all of them are stealing us blind….for people like Dave…who has his head up his ass….NO infrastructure has been built yet in Iraq…..not a friggin thing has been done…but all the money have vanished to companies like Haliburton…who by the way is moving their head quarters to Dubai….so the US government will not have any judicial power when Bush and Cheney bail…with our money….

Finally the main reason I never rode with HOG ever again was that they rode two to five miles…then stopped and had two to three cocktails…and then rode to the next bar….Riding with people that have a total of less than 1000 miles on a bike ever in their lives….and then mix booze into the mix…..it is identical to leaving a M-16 loaded in a room full of kids….who do not know better….or sending your kids to play on the freeway with matches and razor blades…. I heard one of my long term friends who rides a bike exclusively….has done so his whole life and does not own a car at all…rents a truck once in a while when he needs a four wheeler….he has perhaps over a million miles on two wheels…and said….that the only time he ever laid his bike down is when he had drank more than two beers…as all it takes is two beers even for the most hard core biker to lose the edge that is needed to ride two wheels….most long term ,life long bikers will agree….in a car one can perhaps drink 30 beers….and still keep it on the road….I would not advise it…but it is seen every day…
We are Americans have become pretty desensitized by the media…we lost 3000 lives in 9-11-2001……but every week in America…EVERY FUCKING WEEK…we lose 3000 lives to drinking and driving alone…
We all need to pitch in, turn off the TV..pay attention and take action as we are not going to learn or grow as a nation until we all take actions…I have been involved for years….one man cannot influence a lot…but when people lead…leaders must follow…..let your voice be heard…..

OK let me start by saying my prayers go out to all who is involved in this case. I want to say that everything does happen for a reason like others have commented on here previously. It was Gerry’s time to go and unfortunately it was in a bad way. I m not here to defend Billy nor am I here to bash him. I am here to say that everyone is saying if , if he did not drink if he did not passon a double yellow line well it’s to late for if’s it HAS happened and now everyone has to just deal with it. Again it was Gerry’s time to go and ther eis nothing anyone can do about it. had it not been on his scooter it would have been at his job or him crossing the street but it was his time to go.
I was in a major accident about 5 years ago. I was T-boned by a guy who ironically was drunk and in a truck and with no license but ther eis more involved the truck was stollen and he was running from the police. I really should not have made it out of my car even the paramedics wereshocked to hear me say can you please hurry and get me out of here. they thought they were going to retrieve a body. i came out of that accident with not one cut only bruises and found out the same day that the abdominal pain i was having was not internal bleeding but it was a beautiful baby girl growing inside of me that i had no clue about ( she is a very active 4 1/2 yr old now who tortures her baby sister) but you see i made it out of this crash because it was not my time and nor was it my daughters time. so everyone please remember to not jduge anyone on their mistakes they will eventually meet their maker and be judged by him . yes all this was was a major mistake on both parts Gerry should not have gotten on his scooter drunk nor should billy had gotten in the truck , hell he could have gotten laid right there in his shop. but the fact of the matter is he didn’t and it again it is because everything happens for a reason. I do hope he gets some sort of punishment ,not that having killed a guy on his conscience is not enough, but it will show others that you just can not drive drunk and you can not drive with a suspended license. When will people ever learn : DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE. It’s just as simple as that. Have you ever noticed that when they get pulled over, they always have “had just a couple of beers?” That statement right there tells me it was a whole lot more than that. After all, why do people drink anyway? Most of the time, for the feeling it gives you. So if it makes you feel different, it’s going to affect the way you drive. And if you are an alcoholic, it takes even more alcohol to affect you since you build up a tolerance. It makes no difference if the victim was asset to society or not. He was murdered by a drunk driver. Billy Lane should get the punishment he deserves. It was his choice to get in that vehicle and drive drunk. A choice that not only affected him for the rest of his life, but the victims family and friends. The law should punish these drivers to the fullest extent of the law–regardless of how rich, popular, nice, or whatever. When they start to make examples out of these people, then maybe they will think twice about their actions. But then again, they’ve only had a”couple of beers”…The world shouldn’t have to suffer because of somone’s stupid act, and quit giving alcoholics an excuse because they have a “disease”…..

Billy Lane did not “murder” the victim. Both parties were legally drunk. O.J. Simpson murdered 2 people. It would have been nice if O.J. had gotten a D.U.I. on his way to kill Ron and Nicole, but it didn’t work out that way.
Look at the bright side, the “Innocent” victim was hit by “T.V. biker god “Billy Lane. Had your average baby boomer poser on an ultra classic hit the victim, then there would be no civil suit to recover his loss.
Ron and Nicole’s families have yet to recover a dime. Billy’s victim has reached a settlement agreement.
D.U.I. is a business, why else would the system let people plea bargan and get back on the road a.s.a.p. If you want to increase your chances of living a long life then lower your risk of danger by staying off the road after 10:00p.m. on the weekends.

I have been reading this blog for months now (without commenting) and it seems that some people want to punish Mr. Lane to make an example out of him. Is it not enough to punish someone, regardless of who they are, to the common level of the law for such a crime? Why should Lane be made an example of just because he is “Famous”. The Morelock family and the Lane family will both suffer for a long time due to the mistake Billy Lane made the night he decided to drink and drive. My heart goes out to the Morelock family for their loss. This will haunt Billy Lane every day of his life until he one day passes as well. Then and only then will he be truely punished. All my fellow rider, remember to always be alert and in control when you ride, your family will thank you for it.

I have been reading this blog since the very start of it and a lot of interesting points come up.
I have to laugh at the comments about lawyers being the scum of the earth……the reality is that lawyers have been protecting people of this great land from a hostile government and even moreso from corporations that are criminals. Furthermore….great attorneys have set the presedent of our laws with cases like Roe VS. Wade..giving women their rights back…originally taken away by right wing conservative witch burning christians…
Also look at the Erin Brocovich story…it is in a movie with Julia Roberts…it is about a class action law suit that was created to protect the people, people who had families and lives that were destroyed by a corporation poluting the ground water. The company was PGE. It still remains one of the largest settled law suits in our history. More great law suits involve the Ford case where Ford built that piece of shit car, the Pinto….the Ford Motor Co. knew fully well that the car would explode upon impact….but did not do a fucking thing about it.
The Insurance industry in our country has an average profile margin of over 1100%. That is eleven hundred percent…..no industry on earth has that kind of profit margin….yet media brainwashes society into thinking that the ambulance chasing attorneys are causing rates to go up. Total bullshit….but people gobble it up. Insurance has a bigger profit margin than Pablo Escobar who poluted our country with a snow storm of cocaine.
Our nation is turning into a nation of cry babies…everyone is entitled , yet take no accountability for their actions….everyone wants to be a victim….look at the option arm mortgages that are coming due and people being evicted out of their homes….they chose the minimum payments and then want to whine cause they made the wrong decision…and then of course it is the banks fault…..
Bill Ford was in CNBC the other day asking people to start buying Ford vehicles as he did not want his families legacy to die with losing market share and perhaps have to go out of business. My response to that is to inform him that his vehicles are shitty and fall apart….and to make better cars and then compete in the market….but to whine about it cause he may have to get his finely manicured hands dirty and have to drop his trips to Paris, Monaco and spending time on his 400 foot yacht in the Carribean….that will not happen…..the GT 40 which was their flagship has had more recalls on it than any car in their history…..why? Cause Bill Ford wanted it done fast…..and the result was a piece of shit…
Ford GM and Chrysler with the oil companies have banned all foreign cars and trucks to be imported with diesel motors…into the USA….we are now the only country in the world that rewards people with a tax break to own the biggest gas guzzler vehicles…..to swallow up all the worlds oil….it is wrong and people do not care as long as they can get their case of beer for the weekend and drive their gas hogs to the local sports bar…
Our nation is in trouble…serious trouble….the patriot act has made us without rights…allowing our government to take us off of US soil and send us to torture camps offshore…..if you think this is a joke…then wake up and realize that it is happenening all over. Bush and Cheney fired the committee off bean counters that were keeping track of the money we are spending in Iraq….which is 4.5% of our total gross domestic product….and now they have carte blanche to write checks for whatever amounts they are able to spend. The war in Iraq is using 2/3′s of what we import in total oil every year. If you are reading this and are lets say 40 years old and have kids that are in their teens….then their great great grand kids will be still paying back the fleecing of America by George and Dick…..you have to wonder what kind of country we live in when the three main players are dick, bush and colon….sounds like we are getting reemed….
On the topic of Billy Lane. I have to agree that he is held accountable…..but at the same time not crucified….as he could have just as easily have killed a person stone cold sober…..being stuck with a reckless driving manslaughter charge…. People make mistakes all the time and some of them are tragic and very sad…..it is a part of life.
over 30 000 people each year get killed in drinking and driving accidents…EVERY YEAR….ten times the 9-11 disaster and tragedy…but no one seems to have a memorial for all the innocent parents, kids and innocent people that are killed due to this. Alcohol is responsible for more police calls to 911 than any other cause in our great land. Domestic disputes are the number one duty of a beat cop……
We have a wave , an epidemic of meth amphetamine sweeping across our land…and it is important that we all participate in dicouraging kids from becoming addicts….
I just got done reading Billy Lanes book on how to build a chopper and read his other book about him and his life. He is a brilliant man and yet needs to be accountable for his actions. But at the same time not be persecuted by our society. We all know someone that has driven home drunk from a party. I agree that ruining two familes is not the solution…
if they let Billy Lane do his time working with kids in adolescent drug and alcohol rehab centers….then he would be doing society a great deed and it would lessen the future rate of deaths….but Bush and Cheney have been proping up privatized prisons….to save tax payers money…but the reality is that they cost more as the employees get paid jack shit, the corruption is sky high….the prisoners sometimes eat dog food…or close to dog food…and the owners of the prisons make a shit load of money….

New World Order politics state that the rich make the poor poorer with placing the majority of the tax burden on them…….if anyone remembers…we left England to get away from taxes and taxes imposed on us by the wealthy….to make the people pay for their lifestyles as they were royalty and it should be an honor for the peasants to pay for their castles and treasures….

Only an idiot would think that getting compensation for the death of a loved one would be the bright side.Only that same idiot would call some one a Biker God after Taking the life of someone else.You should probably let people know how old you are so they dont think you are sixth grader because thats the only thing that would explain your lack of intelligence. Who Billy is has nothing do with if or if not a personal injury suit could be filled. That suit could of been filled if the accident was caused by a baby boomer.

What settlement? As far as I know Billy has not plead guilty to any thing yet so what is there to settle on. Paying the family would have to be an admition of guilt and I have not herd about Billie pleading guilty.

Only a moron would plead guilty in our court system. Our system is designed to protect ALL of us. Billy Lane case is not just about a DUI driver killing someone…but more about the whores in society. Dodge is a whore…and they should be treated worse than a whore…..
I hope that Billy Lane gets five years of community service serving 1000 hours per year talking to kids all over the country…kids who are high risk kids…..to teach them how to become responsible adults and to take accountability for their actions….something that Dodge has never done….but why not lead by example…

I find it interesting that Billy would sell out to a company like Dodge as his anti establishment T shirts have “fuck the factory” on the sleeves….and endorsing Dodge is like him endorsing Harley Davidson. Perhaps a contradiction in terms of selling out to the man. Joining the establishment and taking their money.
From a biker standpoint I have followed Billy’s career and he is truly one of the great builders of our time along with Indian Larry, Jesse Jame and the guy in his garage that is making all of his own parts, that unknown guy who builds labors of love and loves his work.
At the same time I would not turn down a free truck…no matter what brand it is and would probably follow as it is hard to make a decent living in the bike business unless you are very capital intensive.
With being a part of the establishment..perhaps a haircut and some golf attire would be more appropriate for Billy and he can go hob knob with the Dodge execs.
Billy, if you are reading this, I as a person can pray to the gods that they forgive you and I pray that you get stronger from this experience and lay off the sause. More talented people fall into self pity than any other group of people and that is the real shame.
My best friend was wiped out by a drunk driver last year on his motorcycle…one of the most competent and skilled riders I have ever known…raced bikes, sold bikes and built them….one of the greatest people I have ever known…a true friend…a guy who would give one the shirt off of his back if it were the last possession he owned. When it happened…I wanted to kill that mo fo and take him down….but it turns out that he had had 15 DUis in the past…a drunk…someone so down on their luck that when he woke up in the drunk tank he could not even remember having killed my brother, friend and life long fellow enthusiast.
Fame makes people legends in their own minds and do not fall into that pattern. It will make you a bozo and someone that has no respect. Perhaps at the next few bike shows you go to you should publically announce what happened and share your experience with others. That will make you loved as a human being and not resented as some scum bag…
Keep building great bikes, follow your heart and know that even though you are accountable, the answer is not in the bottle…nor in the baggie.

I used the word “innocent” because that is how everyone refers to the victim in this case. What’s so “innocent” about riding your moped drunk???
I don’t think compensation can replace a loved one either. I guess my point was if your going to ride your moped drunk, then hopefully your lucky enough to hit a celebrity.
The civil trial for $$$$$$$ is seperate from the criminal trial Gene, so I guess your a moron for not knowing that. Usually the civil takes place after the criminal,(O.J.) but there obviously was enough $$$ on the table to make a deal. Maybe the defense team was going to bring up the fact that the victim was D.U.I. also and that could potentially hurt the value of the claim somewhat. Who knows? Why would you settle out of court if your 100% innocent and got the defendent by the balls?
“Biker God” was a figure of speech used to show that T.V. builders have now become larger than life and a lot of people think they are important.
I own 3 bikes and have put on more miles in two years than you will the rest of your life.

Billy is a good man and lost. My brother wrecked his bike last year because of his passneger being drunk.She was waivin and out of control and was making him swerve,, My brother quit drinking 10 years ago … They hit a car killin the driver. My brother is now doing 20 years because he didnt tell the pasenger his ex wife to get a cab home.. She didnt even get a ticket or a slap on the wrist, how sad
Billy drinks and drives all the time I have known him for 10 pluss years. He should do time for what he has done, its sad but the law is the law,,, I was with him ounce and a cop et him go two blocks latter he hit a car and another bike and got out his check book,It was going to catch up to him.

There is such a cultural standard of mixing alcohol with fun. It seems that many people don’t know how to have fun without drinking. There is certainly temptation to drink at Poker Runs and charity rides when each stop is at a bar, but to be a RESPONSIBLE rider, you never, ever throw a leg over that bike if you’ve been drinking. If anyone in our riding group has a drink, they KNOW are not allowed to ride with the group and they know that their keys will be taken from them so they don’t injure themselves or someone else.
My best friend was killed by a drunk driver, and I have absolutely no tolerance for anyone who gets on a bike or behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated. One or two drinks? You’re still impaired.
I used to respect Billy Lane as a builder, but as a human being I seriously question his sense of responsibility. As a public figure you are held to higher standards of behaviour, especially when you’re involved in endorsement deals.
Prayers up for all parties affected by this tragedy, including Billy.

I see Billy pled no contest……hope the judge slams him give him 9 years. But will the suspended drivers license really stop him? His lawyers will get him a hardship d/l and he will continue to drive and drive drunk. Watch out Florida drivers he will be driving again and you will be not be safe. Hopefully it will be a full nine years in jail for him……..we’ll see

I’d rather do the time than pay the friggen lawyer a dime one. I would of pleaded the case immeaditly and been out already. This comes from first hand experiance not hearsay. Life will go on either way. The sooner you go in — the sooner you get out.

The bottom line is alcohol and driving, biking, Riding or boating do not mix. It’s like Russian roulette. Also everyone knows that when an alcoholic drinks, another personality takes over and it’s that personality that gets them into trouble. They think they are invincible when they drink. We all feel sad and remourseful when we screw up but there are consequences for our actions no matter how big or small. How else do people change and grow up and stop stupid behaviours? By being punished for their wrongs. Justice has to be served or else laws are on the books for nothing. A man is gone and can’t come back. Billy is fortunate he still has his life. His forgiveness is between him and God. In the end Billy has to meet his maker too.

Billy Lane; if he does any prison time; he should be allowed to teach prison inmates how to design and fabricate products such as choppers. That much talent is such a terrible thing to waste.
Furthermore, after all this courthouse and possible prison time for Billy passes, it would be great if he would sell his fabrication designs to a manufacturer that could mass produce his work. Come on Billy Lane, share your great designs with the masses, go with mass production!
More importantly, DWI and reckless driving is stupid, careless, exciting, fun, for lots of people until they get caught. Now that yet another person is dead from reckless driving under the influence of alcohol, what idea can we the people come up with to really get people to DRIVE SOBER? Or what great idea could possibly get Non-Sober people to take alternate transportation driven by a SOBER DRIVERS?
In jest, I suggest we the people (with taxes and corporate sponsers) legally approve television and internet commercials that heavily promote the DRIVE SOBER SOBER DRIVERS PLAN. The DSSDP.
Allow me to explain: These ads would show super beautiful bikini models driving alternate public transporatation like (Busses’, Taxis’, Limos’, Trains, Boats, and Airplanes). Then you would see a dude drunk, stoned, or simply wasted, as in: NOT SOBER.
This guy would make a phone call and a public transit vehicle would be dispatched in 5 minutes or less. Then a super hot perfect 10 female bikini beauty driver would pull up and give a FREE RIDE with a simple you’re not sober blood test. (Otherwise the ride is a standard livery fare) Every perfect 10 female driver would offer an additional service as a legal (Federally funded) escort service at affordable competitive prices.
Finally, going out to bars and clubs, getting totally drunk would become the addiction of just about every adult; all in the name of atleast getting with that perfect 10 bikini driver.
Alcohol beverage manufacturers, bars, clubs, and restaurants would be booming with business everywhere (And could help legalize and fund this Drive Sober Proposal). Most men would work harder and smarter to get safely lit and laid all across America.
Remember- The DRIVE SOBER SOBER DRIVERS PLAN!
Billy Lane could act in some of these Drive Sober Sober Drivers commercials as part of his possible public service sentence.
Let’s face it, this idea would work! Every sort of Tom, “Dick”, and Harry could find love or atleast lay. Let’s not wait for dictators to make silly laws; let’s all take action at the Federal level!!! Vote yes for the Federal DRIVE SOBER SOBER DRIVERS PLAN!!! We can save lives and lost love once and for all…

you will find out that all girls look like 10′s when your drunk.
