Billy Lane faces charges of DUI/Manslaughter

A first appearance date has been set for Melbourne chopper builder, Billy Lane.

William “Billy” Lane is scheduled to make his first appearance in front of Judge Majeeb on October 27, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. at the Moore Justice Center in Viera, Florida.

Billy Lane has been charged with DUI Manslaughter, DUI Serious Bodily Injury and Driving while License Suspended/Revoked With Serious Injury or Death stemming from a fatal crash on September 4th.

The victim, Gerald Morelock,56 of Melbourne Beach, Florida was killed instantly when the Dodge truck that Mr. Lane was driving struck him head-on while riding a 1983 Yamaha Motor Scooter. Witnesses have reported that they saw the 2006 black Dodge pickup cross over the double yellow lines southbound on Highway A1A in an attempt to pass two vehicles. Florida Highway Patrol troopers suspected that the collision was alcohol related on the night of September 4th, but had to wait until blood test came back from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Crime Lab before filing charges. Emergency paramedics have stated that they smelled alcohol coming from Lane as well.

Viera Court House

Billy Lane turned himself in to the FHP on September 25th accompanied by his attorneys and was released 90 minutes later on a $15,000.00 bond. Mr. Lane is scheduled to appear in North Carolina on October 5th on alcohol related charges only weeks before his scheduled first appearance here in Florida. North Carolina Police reported Billy Lane was pulled over for driving on the wrong side of the highway, not wearing a helmet and refusing to submit to a BAC test. FHP Troopers also stated that Mr. Lane had refused to take the test on the night of the September 4th wreck. Troopers later took the blood test at the hospital where Billy Lane was treated and released for injury.

Double Yellow no-passing zone on A1A Melbourne Beach, Florida

Image of Melbourne Beach no-passing zone

There are still conflicting reports as to exactly where the fatal crash that took the life of Melbourne Beach resident Gerald Morelock happened.
I have read that it happened on State Road A1A near Ballyshannon Street, which would be the view in the image below

Southbound view of Ballyshannon street and State Highway A1A

Highway A1A and Ballyshannon Street intersection

Reports have also indicated that the impact of the sponsored Dodge pickup driven by Billy Lane and the Yamaha motor scooter driven by the victim Gerald Morelock happened at the intersection of Highway A1A and Windemere Place, pictured below.

Camera view from Windemere Place and Highway A1A

No-passing zone on Highway A1A and Windemere Place

All of the photographs here show the area of the crash with clearly marked double yellow no passing zone indication on the pavement. There is a notable difference, however, if the crash impact happened closer to the Ballyshannon Street intersection. Notice that this area is including turning areas marked off for a shopping center and the street intersection.

All images indicate that the Florida Department of Transportation and by way of Florida State driving laws have ruled this entire area unsafe to pass and painted double yellow lines on the pavement meaning this is a no-pass zone. None of the articles that I had read and seen have included photographs of the highway where this tragic crash took place.

Intent is no longer an issue

Posted in Brevard County, Chopper Builders, DUI, Editorial, Florida, Law, Melbourne, Opinion on September 28th, 2006

Back when the news of chopper builder Billy Lane causing a fatal accident first came out, there were many questions.

Looking back at my posts on the subject and as I read the closing remarks of “when heroes become bad guys” I said that I knew that it was not intentional what happened.

Weeks later the reports of Billy drinking all day, bar hopping and a blood alcohol content of 0.192 removes “intent” from the incident.

The issue now becomes knowingly.
Billy Lane knowing he was intoxicated chose to continue driving, he knowingly passed in a no passing zone. I think it is safe to say that he knew he was driving illegally by his refusal to a blood test.

Let’s take a look at how dictionary defines knowing also we can take a look at the word knowingly
when we look at the definition of the word we can see that because he knew the facts above, it shows intent with knowledge.

Therefore by my knowing now what I did not know then. I can no longer say that it was not intentional. Having the knowledge or knowing can make the difference of intent.

What are Google Alerts?
Google Alerts are emails automatically sent to you when there are new Google results for your search terms. Google currently offer four types of alerts: ‘News,’ ‘Web,’ ‘News & Web,’ and ‘Groups.’

These are a great tool for a journalist! They are also very resourceful for people that want to keep up on news and events. They are much more simplified and easier to use than a news feeder.

You will need a free Google account, but once you set these nifty alerts up you will learn to enjoy them. You control the actions of your Google alerts and set your own keyword search. You can choose to have the alerts sent to you when it happens, once a day or once a week. The alerts come to you in your email and show a brief story line to see if it is something you may want to read. If the story looks interesting to you, click the link and boom you are there. You also have the choice of setting up your Google Alerts to search the web or news.

Billy Lane arrested on DUI Manslaughter charges in Florida

Posted in Brevard County, Chopper Builders, DUI, Florida, Law, Melbourne, Motorcycles, News on September 25th, 2006

Billy Lane arrested

Billy Lane had a BAC of 0.192 after fatal crash

It appears that the alcohol blood level tests that were taken from Biker Build-Off Winner Billy Lane have come back positive. William D. Lane also known as Billy Lane of Choppers Inc. in Melbourne Florida was arrested today when his BAC test came back reading 0.192. Florida state DUI law allows for alcohol content to be no more than .08.

Billy Lane turned himself in and was charged with DUI Manslaughter in the case related to the fatal accident involving Billy Lane and victim Gerald Morelock on September 4th.

It was reported by witnesses that Billy driving his black Dodge pickup had crossed the double yellow lines attempting to pass two vehicles when he struck and killed motorcyclist Gerald Morelock. Troopers wanted to wait on the test results to return before filing charges and arresting chopper builder Billy Lane.

Services were held for Gerald Morelock on September 17th at the Sebastian Inlet Park where Gerry worked as a park ranger and spent much of his off time fishing. About 60 people showed up on that day to pay their respects and tell stories about Gerry. Gerald Morelock had visited the Sebastian Inlet park in his youth with his family and always wanted to move to the area.

No comments have been published from any of the members of Gerald Morelock’s family since today’s arrest and Billy Lane has remained silent since the day of the tragic crash.

Billy Lane also faces charges of a DUI in North Carolina and is scheduled to appear in court in October 5th for that incident. The Florida DMV site shows that Billy Lanes drivers license is valid. However, in a statement released by the Florida Highway Patrol earlier today, his license is suspended for refusing to take a breathalyzer test during the North Carolina traffic stop for DUI. The FHP also stated that Mr. Lane refused to take alcohol test on the night of the fatal crash. Billy Lane can face up to 15 years per charge if convicted of the charges in the fatal crash.

Herbal Medicine: Cindi’s Lupus Tea

Posted in Cooking, Food, Healing, Health, Herbs and Oils, Lupus, Recipes on September 22nd, 2006

My wife, Cindi, has lupus. We are not positive at this time as to which type of Cutaneous (skin) lupus that she has, but we think that it is of the discoid type effecting the skin. She had a skin biopsy performed back last week and we are hoping to get results Monday when she has her stitches removed.

Over the past few weeks I have started a quest to find out more about the disease and possible herbal help for it. The medications that she has to take (steroids) are scary to say the least. So a all natural herbal cure is a option that I wish to take if at all possible.

In some of my first findings I looked at types of internal treatments and found a mixture of herb and mushrooms that I make into a tea. This tea is good to help the body’s immune system. Here is the recipe for Cindi’s Lupus Tea and the description of the medicinal qualities of the ingredients.

For Cindi’s Lupus Tea, use equal amounts of the following ingredients. It is suggested to purchase at least 2 oz. of the mixture, ground and mixed in equal parts and 2 oz. of green tea.

You will need tea bags and a teaspoon measure device. Put one teaspoon of the Cindi’s tea mixture and one teaspoon of green tea in a tea bag and close. We use the iron type of tea bags.

Astragalus:

Astragalus membranaceus, or huángqí (??, literally “yellow leader”; also called beiqí, ??, literally “northern leader”) is a tonic herb originally used in Chinese medicine. It is believed to be a galactagogue, and recent studies show that it may strengthen the human immune system.

The natural gum tragacanth, which is used in pharmaceuticals and textiles, is obtained from Astragalus tragacanthus. It is claimed to help the immune system, and to increase the body’s resistance to common viruses.

In western herbal medicine, Astragalus is primarily considered a tonic for enhancing metabolism and digestion and is consumed as a tea made from the roots of the plant. It is also traditionally used to strengthen the immune system and in the healing of wounds and injuries

Shittake Mushroom:

Shiitake mushrooms have been researched for their medicinal benefits, most notably their anti-tumor properties in laboratory mice. These studies, the earliest dating back to 1969, have also identified the polysaccharide lentinan, a (1-3) ß-D-glucan, as the active compound responsible for the anti-tumor effects.[citation needed] Extracts from shiitake mushrooms have also been researched for many other immunological benefits, ranging from anti-viral properties to possible treatments for severe allergies, as well as arthritis.[citation needed]Lenthionine, a key flavor compound of shiitake, also inhibits platelet aggregation, so it is a promising treatment for thrombosis.[citation needed]

Shiitake are also one of a few known natural sources of vegan and kosher vitamin D (vitamin D2).

Maitake Mushroom:

The underground tubers from which hen of the woods arises has been used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine to enhance the immune system. Researchers have also indicated that whole maitake has the ability to regulate blood pressure, glucose, insulin, and both serum and liver lipids, such as cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids, and may also be useful for weight loss.

Reishi Mushroom:

Reishi Mushroom is also known by the name Lucky Fungus. Reishi Mushrooms grow wild on decaying logs and tree stumps in the coastal provinces of China. The fruiting body of the mushroom is employed medicinally. Reishi occurs in six different colors, but the red variety is most commonly used and commercially cultivated in North America, China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. The Latin word lucidum means “shiny” or “brilliant”, and refers to the varnished surface of Reishi’s cap, which is reddish orange to black. In Japan, 99% of Reishi growing in the wild are found on old plum trees, and wild Reishi Mushrooms are rare. In the Taoist tradition, Reishi is said to enhance spiritual receptivity. It was used by monks to calm the spirit and mind. It is also considered a symbol of feminine sexuality. Reishi has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 4,000 years to treat liver disorders, hypertension, arthritis, and other ailments. The Chinese have always regarded the mushroom as having special properties. Mushrooms are regarded as “spirit medicine’ because they are believed to nourish the “shen”, or spirit. As such, they are considered particularly important in vegetarian diets and regarded as a medicinal food that promotes longevity. Various medicinal mushrooms are used by the Chinese.

Lima Beans

Posted in About Me, Cooking, Dis-likes, Food, Health, Humor, Opinion on September 21st, 2006

I don’t like Lima beans or butter beans whatever you want to call them. It does not matter how they are cooked… I don’t like them period.

As a kid my mother used to make me eat at least a few of them! YUK! I swallowed them whole like a pill, washing them down with kool-aid.

Sony Mavica 400

My wife and I do photography, commercial and for our sites. We started out back in 2003 when we opened our first bike event site. We had a Sony Mavica CD400 that we purchased at Best Buy here in Melbourne. I bought the extended warranty on the camera and was glad that I did.

Although the camera worked well, when it was working, it had to go to the shop at the geek squad too many times. It ended up being deemed a lemon, so I got to get a new camera from the store. I was happy with the fact that I could get a new camera, but not happy that they no longer made or stocked the Sony Mavica. We shared the camera when we worked and Cindi really like to use it to take her “on the road” shots for Bike Week and Biketoberfest.

Nikon D50

I ended up picking out the a Nikon D50 from the camera department at Best Buy and I am really happy with it. However, we took a loss on not being able to get a new Mavica to replace the bad one. We had purchased many accessories to go with the camera. Extra batteries, car charger, etc. I really like the simplicity of the Sony and you can not beat the fact that your pictures are recorded to a mini CD! When you start running out of space, about 300 high resolution pictures, you just pop in a new CD. This really comes in handy when you shoot a few thousand pictures during a motorcycle event.

I am really happy with my Nikon D50. It is an SLR digital and there are many things that I can do with this camera that I could not with the Mavica. At the same time I missed the Sony and we still have to share, being we only have one camera.

Today I won a used Sony Mavica on EBay for under $200.00 shipped! I am really excited that now we will have the best of both cameras and not have to share. I purchased the Sony especially for Cindi to use, because she already knows the camera and we still have all the accessories to go with it. With Biketoberfest right around the corner this is going to make our coverage of the event twice as good in pictures.

Wal*Mart cart racing!

Posted in About Me, Editorial, Florida, Humor, Melbourne, Shopping on September 20th, 2006

We live in a world of fast and convenience. Most of us have a 7-11 of other type of convenience store within a mile or two of where we live. Fast food joints are built and open overnight. Americans like to be able to grab things on the run and it is no secret society.

Occasionally, we have to go to a local super-store just to get a few items. We would like the same in and out convenience of the local 7-11 when this happens. However, this is not always the case. Ever notice how the amount of items in the so called quick checkout have gone up? I remember the day when these lanes were for 5 or less items and cash only. Those days are gone! Today the quick checkout lanes are up to 20 or even 30 items and there are those that think that 40 cans of the same brand of cat food constitute 1 item. The only way that you can achieve a quick in and out few item trip to Wal*Mart is to go at 3 a.m. This is really the best time to shop at the store period. Unless you thrive on the idea of to see and be seen shopping at the neighborhood savings store.

OK, so to the point about the cart racing. Today was one of those occasions that we had to go to Wally World only to get 2 items, carrots and ginger root. These items, of course, would not be available at the local convenience store. We get our items quickly. But now comes the big slow down, getting to and through the checkout. Now today this was quite comical to watch. Cindi, my wife, heads off in the direction of the quick lanes while eyeing up the current lines. I watched as her and another lady were scanning the lanes looking for the best route to take. Both women’s carts still rolling and searching for direction, while each was watching the other out of the corner of the eye. I seen the competitive look and stance that these two took while still moving in search of the quickest way out of the store.

The whole time I was in the background watching this scene, the idea of a new indoor racing event came to mind. Wal*Mart cart racing! That is exactly what these two women were poised for and the race was on. The way that the checkout lanes are designed at a Wal Mart is kind of strange to begin with as they have 2 cashiers in a lane. Just as the thought of the sport of cart racing was going through my mind, I seen Cindi spot a lane opening. It was so comical to watch as they both had their eye on the open lane and you could almost hear the sound of revving engines and squealing tires as both started for the checkout. Funny thing was that Cindi was actually 1 lane over so the other lady had the obvious advantage. I watch as Cindi put here head straight up and pushed her cart in high gear down her lane then crossing over to the next to the open checkout. The other lady gave up reluctantly, but knew she had been whipped by a well experienced cart driver.

Daytona Motorcycle Events Growing

Posted in Biketoberfest, Daytona Beach, Editorial, Florida, Motorcycle Events, Motorcycles on September 20th, 2006

If the number of motorcycle enthusiast that showed up for bike week 2006 in Daytona Beach are a gauge of events to come, then this year’s Biketoberfest will be huge.

I wrote an article back in April and posted it in the article section of the biker links at www.bike-weekdaytona.com. The article, entitled Biketober promises to be bigger than ever predicts a record number of bikers at the annual event.

Daytona Beach and surrounding area hotels are filling quickly with Biketober less than a month away. Bikers are gearing up for favorite events like the Boardwalk Classic Bike Show, Concerts and fun activities like coleslaw wrestling at the cabbage patch bar.

Speaking of bike shows, don’t miss out on the biggest and most popular bike show during biketoberfest. I am speaking of course about the Rats Hole custom bike show on Saturday the 21st. Winners from the 2006 rats hole show-off tour will be there for the crowning of the people choice award.

Don’t miss out on this years Biketober motorcycle rally.
